The ASUS RT-BE96U is a premium tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router best suited to homes that can use both Wi-Fi 7 and multi-gigabit Ethernet. It offers a 6 GHz band, two 10Gbps-capable Ethernet connections, AiMesh expansion, and a broad set of ASUS networking features. Its advertised wireless rates are not real-world download guarantees, and buyers with slower internet, older client devices, or a need for several 2.5Gbps LAN ports may get better value elsewhere.

What is the ASUS RT-BE96U?

The RT-BE96U is a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router, marketed by ASUS as BE19000-class. It has 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz radios and a 2.6 GHz quad-core processor. ASUS lists 4×4 radios on each band, 320 MHz channel support on 6 GHz, 4096-QAM, and OFDMA. These capabilities depend on compatible client devices, available channels, interference, distance, and regional rules. ASUS’s product page and official specifications describe the hardware and features.

How fast is the RT-BE96U?

ASUS advertises maximum band rates of 1,376 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, 5,764 Mbps on 5 GHz, and 11,529 Mbps on 6 GHz. Their sum is about 18.7 Gbps, which ASUS rounds to the BE19000 class. These are theoretical combined radio link rates across bands, not the speed one device should expect for internet downloads. A client connects using the bands and capabilities it supports; internet speed is also limited by the broadband plan, network conditions, and distance from the router.

Independent reviews report strong short-range results, but their figures come from different equipment and methods and should not be treated as directly comparable or typical household speeds.

Does the RT-BE96U support MLO?

Yes, with firmware and client-device qualifications. ASUS support documentation updated March 27, 2025 lists MLO support for the RT-BE96U beginning with firmware 3.0.0.6.102_34488. MLO, or Multi-Link Operation, is a Wi-Fi 7 feature that can let compatible devices use multiple links. The available mode and any benefit depend on the client as well as router firmware. Check ASUS’s MLO support information and the router’s firmware before relying on it.

What wired ports does it have?

The RT-BE96U has two 10Gbps-capable Ethernet connections: one configurable as WAN or LAN, and another LAN port. It also has gigabit Ethernet ports, USB 3.2 Gen 1, and USB 2.0. ASUS lists file sharing and media-serving functions for USB storage. Confirm the official regional specification and the WAN/LAN role configuration when planning your setup; port roles affect which connections are available for internet service and local devices.

The two 10Gbps connections can accommodate multi-gigabit internet or a fast wired link to another device. If several wired devices need multi-gigabit connections, check whether the router’s port count matches your equipment or whether you will need a multi-gig switch. A 10Gbps port does not make a gigabit-only connected device operate above its own port limit.

What ASUS software and network features are included?

ASUS lists AiMesh, AiProtection Pro, parental controls, guest networking, and VPN client and server options. Its security feature descriptions include security assessment, malicious-site blocking, two-way IPS, and infected-device prevention; ASUS identifies AiProtection as powered by Trend Micro. These are manufacturer-listed functions, not independent evidence that a network is protected against every threat. VPN support can serve different purposes depending on whether the router is configured as a client or server.

AiMesh lets the RT-BE96U participate in an ASUS mesh network. Confirm that the specific ASUS router or node you plan to use is compatible, and consider placement: adding a node may improve coverage in a weak area, but it does not change the capabilities of devices connected to it.

Who should buy the ASUS RT-BE96U?

It makes sense if

  • You have, or expect to add, Wi-Fi 7 devices that can use its newer bands and features.
  • Your broadband service or wired network can make practical use of multi-gigabit connections.
  • You want ASUS AiMesh expansion and value the listed parental controls, guest network, or VPN options.
  • You can place a large router where its radios can serve the areas and devices that matter.

Consider a less expensive or differently equipped router if

  • Most of your devices use Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 and your internet plan is well below multi-gigabit speeds.
  • You need several 2.5Gbps LAN ports rather than the RT-BE96U’s particular mix of 10Gbps and gigabit connections.
  • Your budget or available shelf space is limited. Tom’s Guide notes that the unit is physically large.

What to check before buying

  1. Inventory your devices: Identify which clients support Wi-Fi 7, 6 GHz, and MLO. Older clients can connect, but cannot take advantage of features they lack.
  2. Map your wired connections: Check broadband handoff speed, wired device port speeds, and whether the WAN/LAN configuration leaves enough LAN ports for your setup.
  3. Plan placement and coverage: Consider where the router can sit and whether an AiMesh-compatible node is needed for distant rooms. The unit’s size may affect placement.
  4. Check firmware and regional details: Verify the local model’s specifications and firmware, particularly if MLO or a specific port arrangement matters to you.
  5. Compare value on like-for-like terms: For competing routers, compare test distance, client adapter, and measurement method, as well as multi-gig port count and roles, mesh compatibility, feature costs, physical size, firmware maturity, and current street price. The cited measurements above use different test setups and cannot establish a universal winner.

Verdict

The ASUS RT-BE96U is compelling when its Wi-Fi 7 radios, 10Gbps-capable ports, and ASUS software ecosystem solve needs you actually have. It is harder to justify if your devices, internet plan, and wired network cannot use that headroom. Treat its BE19000 label as an aggregate theoretical class, and make the purchase decision around your client support, port layout, home placement, and budget.
