To find out whether an Unholy Death Knight build changed after a nerf or hotfix, compare the old and new builds under the same conditions, then separate sustained damage, burst, and multi-target results. Record the live game version first: a hotfix can change the abilities you are testing, and a result from another build may no longer be comparable.

Record the version and test setup

Before changing talents or interpreting a damage result, write down when and where you tested and what the game was running. Unholy tuning can change through hotfixes, and official notes can also fix ability interactions. Record the game build and hotfix date alongside the character and test conditions.

  • Date and region
  • Live game build and known hotfix date
  • Character gear and item level
  • Talents and hero talents
  • Consumables and external buffs
  • Target type, target count, and encounter or dummy
  • Test duration and opening sequence

Blizzard’s March 18, 2026 tuning post said Unholy performance had dropped further than intended and announced adjustments and bug fixes. It is useful historical context, not current tuning advice: Blizzard’s March 18, 2026 notes included broad Unholy and minion damage changes, plus fixes involving Necrotic Coil, Sudden Doom, Plague Mastery, Scourge Strike’s Virulent Plague spread, and Putrefy targeting. Don’t use those past changes to infer what a current build should do.

Choose a test that answers your question

Decide whether you care about sustained single-target damage, a planned burst window, cleave, or broader AoE. A single overall damage figure can conceal where performance changed. Blizzard’s historical tuning notes distinguished damage outside burst windows, while the available SimulationCraft report uses a Patchwerk fight style. Treat these as different questions rather than interchangeable scores.

World of Warcraft - PC/Mac
  • World of Warcraft Game
  • Includes Expansion Packs: The Burnings Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria
  • 30 days of free game time included
  • Includes levels 1 through 90
  • Subscription, Internet connection, and Battle.net registration required
  • Sustained single target: use a repeatable single-target test and compare equivalent durations.
  • Burst: note damage over the same planned window, using the same opener and relevant cooldown timing.
  • Multi-target: use a repeatable target count and timing that resembles the content you play.

Keep the context aligned: a PvP target-dummy result does not establish how a build performs in a PvE raid or dungeon encounter. An April 2026 player discussion described PvP dummy testing and log review, but player suspicions about post-patch behavior are observations, not confirmation of a bug: player discussion of Unholy damage after a patch.

Run a controlled old-versus-new comparison

  1. Define the comparison. State what changed between the old build and the candidate build. Keep equipment and other conditions materially the same so you are testing the build rather than several changes at once.
  2. Use the same conditions. Match gear, talents and hero talents where applicable, consumables, target, target count, duration, external buffs, and opening sequence. If an item or other condition must change, record it; don’t present the attempts as a clean build-only comparison.
  3. Repeat the test. Run equivalent attempts rather than relying on one result. Compare like with like, and note any meaningful difference in setup or execution.
  4. Record separate outcomes. Keep sustained damage and the chosen burst window distinct; add a multi-target result only if that is part of the question.

This is a practical comparison procedure, not a Blizzard-issued testing standard. If you changed the build, gear, target, or encounter conditions at the same time, the result cannot isolate which change caused a difference.

Check logs when the result looks wrong

Use combat logs to see whether the casts and damage sources expected from the build actually appear. Compare equivalent attempts for missing events or unexpectedly different contributions. A suspicious pattern is a reason to investigate, not proof that the game is broken; confirm a suspected interaction against current official notes or reliable technical testing before drawing that conclusion.

Use simulations as a baseline, not a verdict

Before relying on a SimulationCraft result, check that it models the current live game build, your character and intended talents, and a fight style relevant to your question. Patchwerk is a controlled single-target model; it does not answer every burst, cleave, or encounter-specific question.

The latest SimulationCraft search result available for this guide showed World of Warcraft 12.1.0.69933 Live, a hotfix date of 2026-10-03, and Patchwerk as the fight style. The report page could not be opened to verify its full details, so check the live report and your client’s version before using it: SimulationCraft reports. Do not treat its version metadata as a current class ranking or as a DPS target for your character.

Retest after a hotfix

If Blizzard changes Unholy tuning or fixes an ability interaction, the old comparison no longer cleanly estimates performance on the updated game build. Record the new version and repeat the same test conditions. Keeping separate dated results makes it possible to tell whether a change coincided with a patch, a build adjustment, or a different encounter setup.
