Check the exact device model’s official specifications, manual, or setup guide for its supported Wi‑Fi bands. A listing that says “2.4 GHz only” means the device needs a 2.4 GHz network; a listing that explicitly includes both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz indicates dual-band support for that model. Your phone’s current Wi‑Fi band—and the number of network names your router displays—does not establish what the smart device supports.
Find the exact model and check its official documentation
- Identify the model. Check the label on the device, its packaging, receipt, or companion app. Include any hardware revision if the manufacturer distinguishes versions.
- Open the manufacturer’s page for that exact model. Review its specifications, datasheet, manual, and setup requirements. TP-Link advises selecting the correct hardware version and consulting product-specific information: TP-Link IoT network setup guidance.
- Look for supported bands. Wording such as “2.4 GHz,” “2.4 GHz only,” or “2.4/5 GHz” is more useful than a broad Wi‑Fi generation label. Use the bands listed for the exact model rather than inferring support from a generic Wi‑Fi term.
Manufacturer documentation is the reliable way to check: requirements vary by product. Xiaomi says most of its smart devices support 2.4 GHz only; ULTRALOQ says its Wi‑Fi locks support only 2.4 GHz; and Roku setup guidance specifies 2.4 GHz for its Smart Home cameras and doorbells. Those examples do not establish a rule for every smart device.

- Roku Support: network name and password guidance
Check the router when it uses one Wi‑Fi name
A single network name (SSID) can cover multiple radio bands. The router may steer different clients to different bands, so seeing one name does not mean the network is 2.4 GHz-only—or that 2.4 GHz is unavailable. Check the router’s settings, app, or connected-device details for its band information. Google explains that devices on a shared-name network can use different bands; Huawei describes checking through phone settings, the router app, or the router management page.

Keep the phone’s connection separate from the device’s support
Your phone and smart device are separate Wi‑Fi clients. On some routers with a shared network name, your phone can use 5 GHz while the smart device uses 2.4 GHz. Google also notes that some setup processes may require the phone to be on 2.4 GHz. Follow the device’s setup instructions; if necessary, use the router or phone’s available band controls to put the phone on the required band during setup.
Google’s support documentation puts the distinction plainly: “some smart home devices can only use the 2.4 Ghz band and do not support 5 and 6 Ghz.”

If the device supports 2.4 GHz but still will not connect
Band support alone does not guarantee a successful setup. Compare the device’s instructions with the router’s enabled security mode, Wi‑Fi mode, and other specified settings. Do not change router settings just because a generic guide recommends it: the right configuration depends on the device and router model.
For the router models covered in its article, TP-Link identifies band steering, mixed Wi‑Fi modes, and WPA2-PSK settings as checks for IoT setup issues. Treat these as model-specific recommendations, not universal requirements: TP-Link India: Wi‑Fi setup recommendations for IoT devices.

When an IoT network may help
If the existing network cannot provide the band or setup settings the device requires, a dedicated IoT network may be an option if your router supports one. Check the router’s instructions and specifications first.
