On a Samsung Galaxy S23, Google Meet is the most consistently documented way to start a video call. A direct video-call option in Phone or Contacts may also be available, but it depends on your phone’s carrier and software configuration. Here’s how to start a Meet call, use its controls and effects, and choose a route that works on your particular device.
Choose a video-calling route

Use Meet if you want the route Samsung documents directly. If you prefer a contact’s Phone or Contacts screen, check whether a video-call method is actually offered on your device.
Set up Google Meet before calling
- Open the Google folder on your S23 and tap Meet.
- Allow the requested permissions so Meet can use the relevant phone features.
- Confirm you are signed in with the account you intend to use and can find the person you want to call.
- Check that the other participant can join through Meet. If they do not have Meet installed, Samsung says you may need to send an invitation.
Start a video call in Meet
- Open Google > Meet.
- Tap New.
- Choose a contact using search or the dial option, or choose an option to create or schedule a meeting.
- Start the call if you selected a contact. If you created a meeting, share its invitation with the people you want to join.
Samsung’s instructions describe these Meet steps, but screen labels and layouts can change with the phone model, carrier, software version, or app updates. Follow the labels on your current screen if they differ.
Start a call from Contacts if the option appears
Samsung says unlocked devices running One UI 4 or later have Meet integrated for dialer access. In Contacts, open the person’s entry and use the available call-method choices; depending on the device, these may include Google Meet, Video call, or Always ask. The preferred method can be selected for each contact. If these choices are absent, your carrier or software configuration may not offer this route.

Use controls and features during a call
Basic call controls
Samsung lists these controls during a Meet call:
- Flip camera: Switch between the front and rear cameras.
- Camera off: Stop sending video.
- Mute: Turn off your microphone.
- End call: Leave the call.
More options
The More options menu can include in-call messages, screen sharing, captions, settings, and other controls. What appears depends on the app version and the context of the call; do not assume every option will be available on every S23.
Screen sharing and Smart View
When Meet screen sharing is active, Samsung says the selfie video feed is disabled, so participants cannot see you through that feed while you share. Samsung also describes using Smart View to display a call on a compatible TV. The phone camera remains necessary if you want your face shown during the call.

Adjust video-call effects
Samsung documents video-call effects for supported apps, including Google Meet and Facebook. Depending on app and device support, effects can include a background change, face smoothing, color tone, or auto-framing.
Start a supported video call and look for the effects control on the call screen. The available choices vary by app, so an effect described by Samsung may not appear in every calling app.

Troubleshoot missing call options
- Confirm which app is handling the call. Meet controls and effects are not necessarily available in a direct Phone-app call or another calling app.
- Check the current screen’s choices. Carrier and software configuration can affect whether a direct video-call option or a particular control appears.
- Consult regional Samsung support. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 support page for Saudi Arabia provides model-specific support resources. Use the Samsung support site for your own region when available.
- Consider another calling app. Meet and other compatible apps are alternatives when a direct carrier video-call choice is missing.
