Square is often a better fit when you want an accessible starting point, first-party payment hardware, and bundled online or restaurant tools. Lightspeed is worth a closer look when your retail operation needs specialized inventory workflows, multi-store controls, or your hospitality setup depends on specific integrations. Neither is universally better: the right choice depends on whether you run retail or a restaurant, your country, the workflows and integrations you need, and the full cost of your software, payments, devices, and add-ons.

How should you compare Lightspeed and Square?

Start with your business type and the work your POS must handle—not the feature count on a comparison page. Both companies offer tools for retail and restaurants, but they package capabilities differently by product, plan, and country.

  1. Choose your business workflow. Retailers should focus on stock purchasing, receiving, variants, and locations. Restaurants should focus on order channels, table service, kitchen routing, and delivery or property-management integrations.
  2. Use your actual country and setup. Confirm the available product, plan, supported payment methods, device compatibility, and integrations in your market.
  3. Compare the full cost in writing. Include subscription fees, payment processing, add-ons, devices, and integration charges. A plan described as free does not mean the complete setup has no ongoing or upfront cost.
  4. Test the workflow with your own examples. Bring a representative product catalog or restaurant menu to a demo, and check the tasks your staff performs every day.

Where do the systems differ most?

Decision area What to investigate with Lightspeed What to investigate with Square
Retail inventory Purchase orders, custom reorder points, receiving, multi-store inventory, service or work orders, and B2B catalog workflows. Inventory, stock counts and forecasts, barcode printing, purchase orders, vendor management, and multi-store controls.
Restaurant service Order management, QR ordering, kitchen display, delivery integrations, coursing, and any required property-management-system connection. Floor plans, course and seat management, online ordering, kitchen display, mobile POS, QR payments, and check splitting.
Hardware Confirm support for the specific third-party peripherals in your proposed setup, including printers, scanners, cash drawers, and kitchen displays. Compare first-party devices, such as Terminal, with the printers, scanners, displays, and other equipment your workflow requires.
Integrations Verify the exact accounting, ecommerce, delivery, booking, or hospitality connector you need, along with availability in your market. Square says its Canada comparison page lists more than 5,000 partner integrations; that stated count does not establish that a particular connector is available in your market.
Support and setup Ask what onboarding and support channels, hours, and services are included in your actual product and contract. Confirm the support options for your chosen plan and market in the proposal or service terms.

These are areas to verify, not proof that one system includes every capability in every plan. Vendor comparison pages are marketing materials, and feature packaging can change.

Which POS is a better fit for a retail store?

When to investigate Lightspeed

Lightspeed emphasizes inventory-focused retail workflows, including custom reorder points, purchase-order management, multi-store management, service or work orders, omnichannel operations, and integrated B2B catalogs. It also describes a direct NuORDER connection. These may be relevant if your store manages a broad catalog, multiple locations, or special ordering and service work; confirm which capabilities are available in your product and plan.

What do the published hardware prices tell you?

Published comparison-page figures are localized examples, not a current, like-for-like quote. The UK Square comparison page says its underlying competitive data was collected on 23 January 2023, so its figures should not be treated as current prices.

Market and comparison page Device Listed example
UK Square comparison page; underlying competitive data dated 23 January 2023 Square Register £699
Square Terminal £149
Square Stand £99
Canada Square comparison page; localized examples, not a current quote Square Reader C$69
Lightspeed Reader C$99
Square Terminal C$399
Lightspeed Terminal C$529

The Canada page also shows example processing rates, but those examples are not a universal rate card. Ask each provider for current pricing and processing terms for your location and transaction mix. Square’s UK page describes a free POS app with no monthly fee, and its comparison says it offers free retail and restaurant plans; payment fees, hardware, and paid capabilities still belong in your cost calculation.

How should you evaluate payments, devices, and support?

Payments and total cost

Compare the payment rate and per-transaction charges, settlement timing, chargeback fees, subscription, add-ons, and any integration charges. Square promotes an integrated payments ecosystem; Lightspeed may offer its own payments option or integration options, depending on market and setup. Do not compare advertised processing examples unless the country, transaction type, and terms match. Request a written quote for your location and expected mix of in-person and online payments.

Hardware compatibility

Square’s UK comparison lists a portable Terminal with built-in receipt printing. Lightspeed’s Fiscal 2026 filing describes support for several categories of third-party peripheral. Those descriptions do not establish compatibility with every model. Check the exact supported device list for your country and product before buying a receipt printer, barcode scanner, cash drawer, customer display, or kitchen display.

Support and implementation

Lightspeed’s retail comparison advertises one-to-one onboarding and 24/7 support. Treat that as a vendor claim to verify, not as a universal contractual commitment: ask what is included for your product, market, and contract. Confirm Square’s applicable support arrangements in the same way.
