Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Flycast, installed as a core in RetroArch, is a more configurable option for users comfortable with extra setup. Neither emulator supplies game files; use only files you are legally entitled to use where you live.
Which option should you choose?
| Option | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| redream | A straightforward setup on a computer or Android device you already own | Runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and Raspberry Pi 4. It uses a replacement BIOS by default and supports GDI, BIN/CUE, CHD, and CDI images. Its help page lists minimum system requirements. |
| Flycast through RetroArch | People who want more core-level options and do not mind configuration | Supports multiple disc-image formats, saves, save states, rumble, controller remapping, and disk control. You install and configure it within RetroArch. |
| Raspberry Pi 4 running redream | A small, dedicated emulation device | Raspberry Pi 4 is a supported redream platform. The documentation reviewed does not establish a specific Pi configuration or guarantee performance for particular games. |
| GDEMU | Dreamcast owners replacing a failing optical drive | It replaces the optical drive with SD-card loading inside a Dreamcast, so it does not let you play without original hardware. |
Use redream for the simplest setup
Redream is a standalone Dreamcast emulator available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and Raspberry Pi 4. Its product page describes its ready-to-play approach as “No controller configuration, no BIOS or flash files, just add games and play.” In practice, the help page clarifies that redream uses a replacement BIOS by default; an original BIOS is optional, not a prerequisite for getting started.

Check whether your device meets the stated minimums
Redream lists these minimum requirements in its help documentation:
- Desktop: Windows 7 or later (64-bit), 64-bit macOS, or 64-bit Linux; an x86_64 processor supporting AVX2 or SSE2; 512 MB RAM; and OpenGL 3.1.
- Android: Android 5.0; a 32-bit or 64-bit ARMv7 or ARMv8 processor; 512 MB RAM; and OpenGL ES 3.1.
These are the vendor’s minimum specifications, not a promise that every game will run smoothly on every device or setting. Redream says that “Over 95% of the Dreamcast’s library is able to be played from start to finish,” but the page does not state how that percentage was measured or when the compatibility assessment was performed.

Add a game image and configure a controller if needed
Redream accepts GDI, BIN/CUE, CHD, and CDI disc images. Most controllers connect automatically; if yours does not behave as expected, use the Input menu to map its controls manually. The emulator does not provide the games themselves.
Choose Flycast through RetroArch for more configuration
Flycast is a Libretro core for Sega Dreamcast, NAOMI, Atomiswave, and System SP emulation. This route suits users willing to install RetroArch, obtain the Flycast core through it, and work with RetroArch’s system-directory and core settings. The Libretro Flycast documentation marks the Dreamcast BIOS as optional. If you use one, the documented location is a dc directory inside RetroArch’s system directory.

Features and formats
Libretro lists GDI, CHD, CUE, BIN, CDI, and other file extensions for the core. It documents saves, save states, rumble, controller remapping, and disk control. The same documentation marks rewind and netplay as unsupported, so do not assume that every feature associated with RetroArch works with Flycast.
Expect some game-specific quirks
The Flycast documentation records examples that may depend on the game version, driver, or controller behavior:
Rank #3
- Includes the following Sega favorites: Altered Beast, Columns, Golden Axe, Phantasy Star II, The Revenge of Shinobi, Sega Swirl, Shining Force, and Vectorman
- Also includes 4 Sega titles not released in the previous Smash Packs:Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage 2, Virtua Cop 2, and Wrestle War
- Some versions of Crazy Taxi may have missing engine sounds.
- Jet Grind Radio may display police reports incorrectly.
- The documented setup notes that the PAL version of Sonic Adventure requires VGA output.
- The USA version of Unreal Tournament requires VGA (RGB) in the documented setup or may crash at startup.
These examples are configuration notes, not a full compatibility survey; check the core documentation for the specific title and setup you plan to use.
Choose intact game-image formats
When you have a game image you are entitled to use, prefer GDI, BIN/CUE, or CHD over CDI when those options are available. Redream describes GDI and BIN/CUE images as exact copies and recommends CHD when you want lossless compression from GDI to save storage space.
Rank #4
Redream advises against CDI images. Its explanation is that CDI versions fit the original 1 GB GD-ROM content onto an approximately 700 MB CD-ROM and may compress audio or video, modify code, or alter disc metadata. Compatibility and fidelity can therefore be affected. The cited capacity figures describe the media comparison in redream’s explanation, not a guarantee about the size of every image.

A BIOS and a game image are different things. Redream supplies a replacement BIOS by default, and Libretro labels Flycast’s Dreamcast BIOS optional. Neither point grants permission to download proprietary firmware, and neither emulator includes the games you need to play.

Use only game files and firmware you are legally entitled to use in your jurisdiction. Laws differ by country. For example, a Raspberry Pi Official Magazine article discusses UK restrictions on copying purchased software discs and downloading disc images made by others; that UK-specific discussion is not a statement of law everywhere.
When GDEMU is—and is not—the answer
GDEMU is an SD-card replacement for the optical drive inside a Sega Dreamcast. It can be relevant if you own the console and want to replace its drive, but it still depends on original Dreamcast hardware. For a hardware-free setup, choose an emulator instead.
