Note the listed minimum and recommended requirements separately, if both are provided. Requirements are title-specific and can change; Steam notes that game updates may add features or improve fidelity in ways that affect older hardware.

Check operating-system compatibility first
Compare your computer’s operating system and version with the game’s supported platforms and any stated OS requirements. Pay attention to whether the listing requires a 64-bit operating system. A match on processor or graphics hardware does not make an unsupported operating system compatible. Steam advises checking both the compatible operating systems and hardware requirements on the Store page. Steam Support: Game is not available on your current platform.
Compare each PC component with the listing
Gather your PC’s specifications, then compare each one with the corresponding requirement. Check every category the game lists; a strong result in one area does not cancel out a shortfall in another.

- Memory: Compare installed RAM with the required amount, and note that memory available to the game can also affect performance.
- Graphics: Compare your graphics device with the listed video card or GPU requirement.
- Storage: Check that the drive where you plan to install the game has at least the required available space.
Use the minimum and recommended columns as separate reference points. Meeting the minimum is not a promise of a particular resolution, graphics setting, or frame rate. Interpret the comparison realistically
- Your PC meets the listed requirements: That is a useful compatibility indication, not a guarantee of smooth performance. Your desired resolution, settings, and smoothness matter, and the requirements alone do not establish how the game will run on your particular PC.
- One or more components fall short: Treat that as a potential compatibility or performance problem rather than assuming stronger components elsewhere will compensate. The game’s support information and Steam Community discussions may offer title-specific guidance.
- The game runs poorly despite a match: Graphics settings, drivers, background applications, and memory availability can affect performance. Steam recommends checking these factors when troubleshooting. Steam Support: Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Software.
Consider an upgrade only after identifying a shortfall
If the comparison shows that your graphics hardware or memory is below the game’s requirements—or your actual performance is not meeting your needs—an upgrade may help. Steam identifies video card and memory upgrades as possible ways to improve performance, but neither is a universal fix: the right choice depends on the exact game and the rest of your PC. Check the requirements and identify the limiting component before buying hardware.
