For an HDMI-only TV, connect a Dreamcast-specific HDMI adapter to the console’s A/V port, run an HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV, and select that HDMI input. If the adapter has a VGA/RGBS switch, set it before powering on. A basic adapter converts the Dreamcast’s video signal to HDMI; it does not necessarily upscale it.

What you need

  • A Dreamcast-specific HDMI adapter, or a Dreamcast VGA cable plus a compatible scaler or converter.
  • An HDMI cable if your adapter does not include one.
  • A TV or display with an available HDMI input.

The Dreamcast can output composite, S-video, 15 kHz RGB, or 31 kHz VGA over analog connections. External HDMI products convert one of those signals; an internal HDMI modification instead taps digital signals inside the console.

Connect a Dreamcast HDMI adapter

  1. Turn off the Dreamcast and remove its existing A/V cable.
  2. Attach the Dreamcast-specific HDMI adapter to the console’s A/V port.
  3. If the adapter has a VGA/RGBS switch, choose the mode before powering on. Start with VGA for a game that supports it; use RGBS for an incompatible game when the adapter supports that mode.
  4. Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to a free HDMI input on the TV.
  5. Turn on the TV and Dreamcast, then select the TV’s matching HDMI input.

Kaico says its adapter carries audio and video, requires no separate power, supports Dreamcast 480i/480p and PAL 576i/576p modes, and does not upscale or otherwise tweak the image. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. See the Kaico adapter product information and its updated adapter guide.

Dreamcast HDMI adapter with VGA/RGBS switch Connects at the A/V port. Set the mode before powering on; the manufacturer says VGA and RGBS together cover the library. It does not upscale. Most players who want a straightforward HDMI connection and broad game support.
Integrated VGA-to-HDMI cable Combines conversion in one cable, but games that do not support VGA may fail. Pound’s HD Link page showed the product sold out when checked; availability can change. Players who want a simple cable and mainly play VGA-compatible games.
VGA cable plus scaler or converter Adds hardware and configuration. Confirm the device accepts VGA input and outputs HDMI; compatibility and picture results vary. Players who already own scaler hardware or want more image controls.
Internal HDMI modification Taps digital signals inside the console and can offer additional output and scaling modes. Installation requires advanced surface-mount soldering, and some modes may not work with every display. Experienced modders or owners arranging specialist installation who want extra controls.

What to expect from VGA and RGBS

Dreamcast VGA is a 640×480 signal at 60 Hz with progressive scan, which avoids the interlacing of 480i TV output. However, VGA is not universal across the library. SEGA-Dreamcast.com lists 499 of 677 games as supporting VGA; that is a count from a secondary reference site, not an official Sega compatibility database. Its VGA cable page provides the figure.

Kaico names Hydro Thunder and the PAL version of Skies of Arcadia as examples that will not work in VGA mode with its adapter; it says to use RGBS mode for such cases. Consult the Kaico mode guide and switch before turning on the console. The VGA/RGBS option is useful when you want one adapter for games that use different video paths.

HDMI does not automatically mean upscaled

An HDMI connection describes the output connector, not necessarily a higher-resolution picture. Kaico says its adapter does not upscale. Pound describes its HD Link as passing through the Dreamcast’s native display, with the displayed resolution depending on the game or media and the TV. A separate scaler or an internal modification may process the signal, but results depend on the hardware, settings, and display; no universal output resolution can be promised.

When to consider a scaler or internal modification

Use a separate scaler if you want processing controls

A VGA cable and compatible scaler add components and setup steps, but can suit a player who already has scaler equipment or wants its image controls. Check the input direction and supported signal formats: a converter that outputs VGA from HDMI is not interchangeable with one that accepts VGA and outputs HDMI. The RetroTINK site provides information on its scaler hardware.

Choose an internal mod only if installation is covered

Digital-output modifications such as DCDigital/RetroGEM can add output and scaling options beyond a simple external adapter. The trade-off is the installation: the overview describes advanced surface-mount soldering, so this is not a plug-in accessory. Also check whether the display supports the selected output mode; the overview warns that 960p may not work with every display.
