The best password manager is the one that supports your devices, protects its vault with encryption, and gives you a recovery method you can actually use. 1Password, Bitwarden, Proton Pass, and Dashlane are strong candidates to compare, but the available evidence does not establish a universal winner: their security descriptions come from the providers, not independent comparative tests.

For most people, the practical choice comes down to platform support, how the provider describes encryption and sync, the available recovery and sharing options, and the total plan cost. NIST recommends password managers for accounts that still use passwords and recommends enabling multifactor authentication (MFA) on the manager account when available.

Which password manager should you choose?

Use this shortlist as a starting point, not as a tested ranking. Each provider’s security claims below describe its own service. No independent evidence here establishes which one has the best real-world security, autofill reliability, or usability.

Manager What the provider documents Family or sharing details Good fit if you value
1Password End-to-end encrypted vaults; the account password and a device-created Secret Key are part of its security model. It says encrypted data syncs across signed-in devices. Lists individual and five-user family offerings, private vaults, shared vaults, and account recovery materials. A documented Secret Key model and built-in private and shared vaults. 1Password personal and family information; 1Password security model.
Bitwarden Says vault information is encrypted and/or hashed on the local device before it reaches its servers. Lists a six-person family plan. Its plan comparison lists hardware-key two-step login among paid options; confirm eligibility and limits on the current plan page. Local-device protection before server sync and a family option. Bitwarden security and compliance; Bitwarden plans.
Proton Pass Says passwords and other fields receive end-to-end encryption and sync across mobile devices, computers, and browsers. Product pages list a free option, passkeys, sharing, and email aliases. Current plan limits are not specified here; check the live offer. Cross-device and browser sync, plus features listed on its product page. Proton Pass product information; Proton Pass security documentation.
Dashlane Describes a zero-knowledge approach and says vault information remains encrypted on its servers for backup and syncing. Lists Friends & Family with ten accounts; some features are available to the plan manager but not necessarily every member. A larger listed household plan. Check current feature access and billing terms. Dashlane security documentation; Dashlane plans.

Plan counts, prices, features, and platform support can change. Check the provider’s current plan and compatibility pages before subscribing. A listed family size does not by itself tell you how shared vaults, member permissions, or plan-manager-only features work.

What matters when comparing password managers?

Devices and browser support

Make a list of the computers, phones, tablets, and browsers you and your household actually use. Then verify that the manager supports each one, and check any operating-system requirements. The providers above document cross-platform apps or sync, but support and features can change; a broad platform list is not a guarantee that every feature behaves identically everywhere.

Encryption, sync, and account access

Look beyond the phrase “encrypted sync.” Compare what the provider says is encrypted, where encryption happens, what credentials or keys are needed to access the vault, and how authentication controls sync and access. For example, 1Password describes a device-created Secret Key used with the account password, while Bitwarden says vault information is encrypted and/or hashed on the local device before reaching its servers. These are provider descriptions, not independent audits or proof that one service is categorically safer.

Recovery and sharing

Ask what happens if you forget the vault passphrase, lose your phone, or cannot use your second factor. Also check how a household shares credentials, who can access a shared vault, and what happens when a member leaves. Recovery materials and family-plan features differ, so decide how you would regain access before moving important accounts into a new vault.

Features and total cost

Compare password generation, autofill, import and export, passkey support, MFA options, emergency access, and sharing controls. The evidence summarized here does not establish comparative autofill performance or usability. Compare the complete cost for the people who need access, not just an individual plan’s headline price, and verify which features apply to each family member.

How to set up a password manager safely

  1. Choose a service that covers your devices. Check its current app, browser, and plan information against the devices you use.
  2. Create a strong vault passphrase. NIST’s consumer guidance recommends a long passphrase and says that, for a password you create yourself, 15 characters is the minimum it recommends. That is general password advice, not a rule for a manager’s proprietary master-password requirements. See NIST’s password and MFA advice.
  3. Enable MFA on the manager account if supported. Store recovery codes or other recovery information somewhere you can reach without relying on the locked vault.
  4. Generate a unique password for each account that still uses passwords. Reusing one password means one compromised service can put other accounts at risk. Update important accounts first, then work through the rest.
  5. Review sharing and recovery before inviting household members. Confirm which vaults are private or shared, what each person can access, and how you would remove access or recover an account.

NIST’s recommendation is explicit: “For accounts that require passwords, NIST experts highly recommend that you use a password manager.” Ryan Galluzzo, who leads NIST’s Digital Identity Program, also warned against common choices: “The worst password I can think of is ‘password’ or ‘12345,’” followed by, “Those are at the top of an attacker’s list for potential attacks.” Both statements appear in NIST’s article, published April 28, 2025, and updated August 20, 2025.

A password manager does not eliminate account risk. If the vault is compromised, you may need to replace the passwords stored in it; protecting the vault credentials and planning recovery are therefore essential. Passkeys can reduce phishing exposure on services that support them, but they do not remove the need to manage accounts that still require passwords.

Should you use a YubiKey with a password manager?

A physical security key is optional. It can serve as an MFA method on compatible services and devices, but it is not a prerequisite for using a password manager. NIST includes USB dongles among MFA methods. Bitwarden documents YubiKey 4 and 5 Series support for OTP two-step login on eligible paid accounts and recommends FIDO2 WebAuthn where supported. Check the manager’s current instructions and plan eligibility before relying on a particular method.

If considering a YubiKey 5 NFC security key, verify the exact connector and NFC variant against your devices and chosen login method. Yubico describes 5 Series keys as supporting multiple protocols, but compatibility depends on the key, device, and service. Bitwarden warns that losing a two-step login method can lock you out unless you have recovery information or another method configured. Follow its YubiKey setup instructions and keep an independent recovery route.
