You may not need a yellow jack to connect your Wii: if your TV has component inputs, its green jack may also accept the Wii’s yellow video plug. If the TV has HDMI only, the Wii has no native HDMI connection, so you will need a third-party converter. First check the TV’s back and sides for a component row or a concealed input panel.

Choose the connection that matches your TV

TV inputs What to do Important limit
Green component jack marked yellow or “video,” plus red and white audio Try the Wii’s standard AV cable using the shared green jack for yellow video. The TV may require its input mode to be switched to standard AV.
Separate component inputs: green, blue, red video, plus red and white audio Use a Wii component video cable with a compatible Wii. The cable is sold separately; Wii mini supports only Wii AV cables.
HDMI only Use a third-party converter that accepts the Wii’s output and provides HDMI for the TV. Nintendo says the Wii is not compatible with HDMI. No particular converter’s quality, lag, or compatibility is established here.

Try the green-jack workaround for a missing yellow input

Some TVs combine composite video and component video at the green socket. Nintendo’s guidance for a TV without a traditional yellow video input is to connect the Wii AV cable’s yellow plug to the green component jack when it is marked yellow or “video.”

  1. Connect the Wii AV cable’s multi-out plug to the AV Multi Out port on the Wii.
  2. Connect the yellow video plug to the TV’s green jack marked yellow or “video.” Connect white to left/mono audio and red to right audio.
  3. Leave the blue and second red component video sockets empty.
  4. Select the TV input used by the cable. If the picture is black and white, cycle through inputs and check the TV’s menu or remote for a setting that switches the green jack between component and standard AV.

This workaround depends on the TV accepting composite video through that green jack; a green component socket without that shared-input function will not substitute for a yellow input.

Use component video if your TV has the full set of component inputs

For a compatible Wii, a Wii component video cable is the direct cable option when the TV has component inputs. Nintendo says the cable is sold separately. Connect its rectangular plug to the Wii’s Digital AV Out, then match the color-coded plugs to the TV:

GANA Wii to HDMI Converter, 1080P Wii HDMI Adapter with 3.5mm Audio Jack
  • STABLE WII TO HDMI CONVERSION: Convert your Wii or Wii U audio and video signal to HDMI for modern HDTVs, monitors and projectors. Designed for stable signal transmission and synchronized sound and picture, it works with 720p and 1080p HDMI displays while preserving the console’s original image quality.
  • SIMPLE PLUG-AND-PLAY SETUP: No drivers, software, settings or external power required. Connect the adapter to your console, attach an HDMI cable, select the correct HDMI input on your display and start playing. For the most reliable connection, plug the adapter directly into the TV, monitor or projector rather than an HDMI switch or splitter.
  • HDMI AUDIO PLUS 3.5MM AUDIO JACK: Audio is transmitted through the HDMI connection, while the built-in 3.5mm audio output lets you connect headphones, a headset or external speakers. Enjoy private late-night gaming or send the sound directly to your preferred audio device.
  • SUPPORTS STANDARD WII DISPLAY MODES: Compatible with NTSC 480i, 480p and PAL 576i display modes. Some newer TVs and monitors may not accept certain 240p or 480i game signals through HDMI; if no picture appears, set the Wii display resolution to 480p when the game and console support it.
  • COMPACT DESIGN & CLEAR COMPATIBILITY: Measuring approximately 6 × 3 × 1.9 cm, the compact adapter connects neatly behind the console without taking up desk space or adding tangled cables. Compatible with Wii and Wii U consoles using the Wii AV output connection; not compatible with Wii Mini. If you experience no picture, no sound or abnormal display lines, contact customer support for troubleshooting or replacement assistance.
  • Green video to Y
  • Blue video to Pb/Cb
  • Red video to Pr/Cr
  • White audio to left and red audio to right

Select the matching TV input. Do not confuse the component cable’s red video plug with the separate red audio plug.

Set 480p for supported games

With the component cable connected, open Wii Settings > Screen > TV Resolution, select EDTV/HDTV (480p), and confirm. The 480p option requires the component cable. Games that do not support progressive scan continue to display at 480i.

Wii mini limitation

Nintendo states that “The Wii mini is only compatible with Wii AV Cables.” Do not assume the component-cable route works with Wii mini.

If your TV has HDMI only

Nintendo Support says, “The Wii console is not compatible with HDMI.” A Wii-to-HDMI adapter is therefore a third-party converter, not a native Nintendo HDMI cable. A composite AV-to-HDMI converter may also be an option if it accepts the Wii’s composite output.
