Orca Semiconductor announced the OS2000, an IO-Link communications transceiver IC for master and sensor/device applications, on November 6, 2024. It is a physical-layer component—not a complete sensor, IO-Link master, PLC, or factory network. Orca’s announcement specified a supply input of 8–36 V, selectable C/Q driver current settings up to 250 mA, support for COM1, COM2, and COM3, and a 2.5 × 2.0 mm WLCSP-20 package. Those are manufacturer specifications; the announcement’s sampling and production dates were forecasts made in 2024, not confirmation of current availability.

Where the OS2000 fits in an IO-Link system

IO-Link is a point-to-point digital communications protocol for exchanging data bidirectionally between a sensor or actuator and a controller through an IO-Link master. A device connects to an individual master port; the master commonly connects onward to a fieldbus, industrial Ethernet, or another higher-level network. IO-Link is based on IEC 61131-9, as described by Electronic Design.

The transceiver is a building block at either end of the IO-Link connection: Orca positions OS2000 for use in a master or in an IO-Link device such as a sensor. It handles communications between the electronics and the IO-Link line; it does not provide the full functions of the master, sensor, PLC, or network.

Design consideration OS2000 specification or stated feature
Supply input 8–36 V
C/Q driver current Selectable 50, 100, 200, or 250 mA settings
Communications rates COM1, COM2, and COM3
Control interface I2C or GPIO; Orca says more advanced features and diagnostics are available in I2C mode
Other integration features Auxiliary digital input, optional oscillator output for an MCU clock, and internal 20 mA, 3.3 V, and 5.0 V linear regulators
Operating temperature −40°C to +125°C
Package WLCSP-20, 2.5 × 2.0 mm

Orca also specifies adjustable slew rate in I2C mode. These features may help with integration, but their value depends on the host design, line requirements, power budget, and board constraints.

Protection features and MAX22515 compatibility claims

Electronic Design reports Orca’s claims of surge protection on VLP, C/Q, DI, and GND up to ±1.2 kV at 500 Ω, reverse-polarity protection, optional glitch filters, and demagnetization of inductive loads. These details are company-reported features, not independent validation of performance in a particular installation.

Orca said OS2000 is footprint- and function-compatible with Analog Devices’ MAX22515; Electronic Design also reported Orca’s pin-to-pin and software compatibility claim. Treat that as a vendor claim rather than proof of drop-in interchangeability. A replacement design still needs to verify pin behavior, software expectations, electrical limits, package/PCB details, protection needs, and qualification requirements against the relevant documentation.

How to assess OS2000 for a design

  • Choose placement: confirm whether the IC is intended for the master-side interface or the sensor/device-side interface in your design.
  • Match control needs: compare GPIO control with I2C control, especially if diagnostics or adjustable slew rate are needed.
  • Check electrical requirements: confirm the 8–36 V input range and whether one of the listed C/Q current settings matches the application.
  • Verify link and environment: ensure the required COM rate and operating-temperature range suit the target system.
  • Review board and protection constraints: assess WLCSP assembly and layout requirements, and validate any protection features needed for the installation.
  • For a MAX22515 replacement: test the exact hardware and software compatibility requirements rather than relying on the compatibility description alone.

The consulted launch coverage provides no independent head-to-head measurements establishing a performance advantage over another transceiver.

Availability: the announced dates were forecasts

In its November 6, 2024 announcement, Orca expected general sampling in Q2 2025 and mass production in late 2025. Electronic Design’s November 13, 2024 report summarized sampling as the first half of 2025 and production as the second half. These were historical projections. The cited announcements do not establish whether those milestones occurred or whether OS2000 is currently in stock; confirm present availability with Orca or an authorized distributor.

What Orca said about the launch

Orca CEO Andrew Baker described IO-Link transceivers as “the backbone of Industry 4.0” and said they enable communication between devices. That is a company executive’s promotional characterization, not an independently established market conclusion.
