Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Windows includes a free monitoring tool called Performance Monitor (perfmon) that can collect performance data over time and report on it. It is useful when a quick look at current activity is not enough—but the available evidence does not show that it outperforms every paid system monitor. For a fast check of what is using resources right now, start with Task Manager.
Which Windows monitor should you open?
| What you need to do | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| See which apps or processes are using resources now | Task Manager | It shows running apps and CPU, memory, disk, and network use. Microsoft recommends its Processes and Performance views for finding high resource use. Microsoft Support |
| Investigate process details or a program that appears stuck waiting | Task Manager | It provides process details and wait-chain analysis, which can show process dependencies. It does not expose individual thread details. Microsoft Learn |
| Capture a resource spike that happens intermittently | Performance Monitor and Data Collector Sets | They can collect selected performance counters over time and generate reports. Microsoft Learn |
| Configure or script counter collection | logman.exe, typeperf.exe, WMI, or PowerShell |
These are among the interfaces Windows provides for working with performance counters. Microsoft Learn |
How to check resource use in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- In Processes, look for apps or processes using unusually high CPU, memory, disk, or network resources.
- Open Performance to inspect system-level activity, such as CPU or memory usage.
Task Manager is the practical first step when a PC feels slow at the moment. Its exact appearance can differ across Windows and Windows Server versions, so screens and labels may not match on every computer. Microsoft Learn
How Performance Monitor helps with problems that come and go
A snapshot can miss a brief slowdown. Performance Monitor lets you view metrics live, configure Data Collector Sets to gather selected counters over an interval, and review reports from collected data. Open it by pressing Windows+R, entering perfmon, and pressing Enter. Microsoft describes this workflow for observing performance over longer periods. Microsoft Learn
For ordinary checks, you do not need to configure a collection. If you want to record data for later analysis, collection settings can be managed in Performance Monitor; advanced setups may also use logman.exe from an elevated Command Prompt. Microsoft’s example uses a configurable sampling interval and selected counters, so it is a technical option rather than a prerequisite for home users. Microsoft Learn
#1 Best Overall

- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
What the built-in tools do not tell you
- Performance Monitor is not a kernel-tracing tool. Microsoft says it does not access the kernel for logging. Counter collection and low-level tracing are different diagnostic workflows. Microsoft Learn
- Task Manager does not show individual thread details. It does include features such as per-logical-processor views and wait-chain analysis, but those are not a complete view of every process detail. Microsoft Learn
- Counter collection is one part of Windows’ monitoring options. Performance counters can also be accessed through command-line tools, WMI, PowerShell, and APIs; the right route depends on whether you want a GUI, script, or configured collection. Microsoft Learn
Does Performance Monitor outperform every paid system monitor?
That claim is not established. Microsoft documents useful capabilities in Task Manager and Performance Monitor, but those descriptions are not head-to-head tests against paid products. “Better” depends on the job: compare current visibility, historical collection, configurable counters, scripting, remote collection, and specialized troubleshooting features against the same requirements. Without named competitors, a defined workload, and repeatable measurements, it is more accurate to say Windows already has capable built-in monitoring tools than to claim they beat every paid alternative.

Microsoft’s system-tools overview covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That support change does not itself alter what Task Manager or Performance Monitor does; use version-specific guidance for your installation. Microsoft Support
