AI prompt boxes can now handle some of the discovery and interface steps that once meant opening a website, searching its menus, and filling in forms. But they have not made websites obsolete: agents still rely on sites, apps, and their underlying data, and current systems are uneven at completing tasks without careful instructions or oversight.

What does it mean for a prompt box to replace a website interface?

In this context, a prompt box is a conversational input that can route a request to information or tools and return an answer or action. It can hide the steps a person would otherwise take through a conventional interface, but it does not mean the underlying site or application has disappeared.

Microsoft Advertising uses the term “zero UI” for interactions that bypass conventional screen-based interfaces in favor of AI chat, voice, and connected devices. That is Microsoft’s forward-looking concept, not an established industry consensus or proof that screens are going away.

There are different ways an agent can work. Some use APIs and connected services; others can operate a graphical interface. OpenAI’s January 2025 announcement introduced its Computer-Using Agent (CUA), which interprets screen images and uses a virtual mouse and keyboard to click, scroll, and type on websites and desktop software. In that model, a prompt can conceal interface operations from the user while still depending on the interface underneath.

Salesforce’s enterprise view makes the dependency explicit: an agent may become the user-facing layer while apps continue to provide data, logic, and workflow automation. The prompt box is better understood as a new route into digital services than as a replacement for the services themselves.

How much are people changing their web habits?

Surveys indicate growing openness to conversational tools, but they measure different things—stated comfort, self-reported changes, or intentions—not a universal rate of tasks already handed to agents.

Finding What it measures
59% of 1,000 U.S. consumers said they were ready to use AI agents instead of regular websites for some tasks. Microsoft Advertising reported the result in 2026 from a survey conducted in August 2025. Source. Self-reported readiness for some tasks, not observed substitution.
54% of the same 1,000 U.S. consumers said they were comfortable with AI chatbots and conversational search; 61% said they were comfortable using voice commands. Microsoft Advertising, 2026, based on its August 2025 survey. Source. Stated comfort, not measured usage frequency.
In a separate survey of 377 U.S. consumers conducted in June and July 2025, 31% said AI summaries made them spend more time searching, while 16% said they spent less. Gartner reported the results on January 20, 2026. Source. Self-reported effect of AI summaries on search time.
In that same 377-person survey, 31% said they considered more product options because of AI Overviews, compared with 7% who considered fewer. Gartner, January 20, 2026. Source. Reported change in the number of options considered.
In a different survey of 365 U.S. consumers conducted in July and August 2025, 51% said GenAI had changed their research habits. Among those respondents, 71% said they had changed how they phrased queries. Gartner, January 20, 2026. Source. Self-reported research-habit and query-phrasing changes; this is a separate survey sample.

The query changes included more specific terms, question-based inputs, and conversational phrasing. The findings support a shift in how some people search, not the claim that most people have stopped visiting websites.

Can an AI agent reliably do a task on a website?

Agents can operate interfaces, but success depends on the task and test conditions. OpenAI reported the following CUA results in its January 23, 2025 announcement:

Benchmark Reported CUA result Qualification
OSWorld 38.1% Benchmark result reported by OpenAI; it reflects that test set, not a general success probability.
WebArena 58.1% Benchmark result reported by OpenAI; OpenAI noted substantial room to improve on more complex tasks.
WebVoyager 87.0% Benchmark result reported by OpenAI; the announcement described its tasks as relatively simple.

These benchmarks contain different tasks and are not directly comparable. Their scores do not predict whether an agent will succeed on an arbitrary task on your preferred site. OpenAI also described problems with unfamiliar interfaces and text editing, and noted that performance could depend on detailed instructions.

A repeated, clearly specified sequence is generally more tractable than an ambiguous goal spanning an unfamiliar site. The latter raises practical questions: can the agent recover from an error, ask for clarification, and show what it is about to do? OpenAI said CUA requested user confirmation for sensitive steps such as entering login details or responding to CAPTCHAs.

Do people still need to visit websites?

Yes, when they need to inspect the source, compare details, read original reporting or reviews, or complete a transaction directly. An AI-generated answer may be a useful starting point, but it is not a substitute for checking important details against an authoritative source or the actual service.

Google said in August 2025 that total organic click volume from Google Search to websites was “relatively stable year-over-year.” It also acknowledged that some quick-answer queries end without a click and that effects vary across sites. This is Google’s account of its own search traffic, not a complete measure of all web traffic or every site’s performance. Google’s statement should be read alongside survey findings that some consumers say AI summaries lead them to search more and consider more products.

Gartner’s Emma Mathison, Senior Principal in the Gartner Marketing practice, said, “Marketers cannot afford to think of AI as a replacement for traditional search.” That is advice to marketers, but it captures the broader evidence: conversational discovery can coexist with conventional search and direct site visits.

What should website and product teams do?

The evidence supports adapting services for both people and agents, not assuming that every site should become a chat interface. Teams evaluating an agent-mediated path against a direct website experience can assess:

  • Task completion and errors: Does the flow accomplish the intended job, and how often does it fail?
  • Source visibility: Can the user inspect the information behind an answer or action?
  • Correction and recovery: Can a person revise an instruction or recover from a wrong step?
  • Speed and convenience: Does the agent reduce effort without adding confusing steps?
  • Privacy and permissions: What data can the agent access, and which actions require confirmation?
  • Authoritative integrations: Does it use current, reliable data and supported ways to perform actions?
  • Auditability and human support: Can actions be reviewed, and is there a human path for sensitive or failed tasks?

Salesforce offers one enterprise architecture example: a user-facing agent can coordinate specialized agents that use APIs to work with CRM, ERP, and commerce systems. The company argues that connected, structured data, policy controls, security, auditability, and transparency are prerequisites. This is a vendor perspective, not evidence that every organization needs the same design. Salesforce executive Adam Evans wrote that “humans no longer need to navigate those systems themselves” when agents handle the complexity; that is a forecast about the direction of enterprise interfaces, not a neutral finding about current capability.

What is the realistic outlook?

Prompt boxes are absorbing some discovery and task steps, and agents can already interact with conventional interfaces. But their reliability varies, consumer survey responses do not establish widespread task delegation, and Google’s reported search click volume remains relatively stable overall year over year. Websites still matter as sources, destinations, and transaction systems—even when a conversational agent becomes the first place a user starts.
