To shut down a Samsung Galaxy S22, swipe down from the top-right of the screen to open the Quick panel, tap the power icon, then tap Power off. You can also press and hold the Side key and Volume down key until the power menu appears, then choose Power off, as described in Samsung Support.
Turn off the Galaxy S22 from the Quick panel
- Swipe down from the top-right edge of the screen to open the Quick panel.
- Tap the power icon.
- Tap Power off. If prompted, tap Power off again to confirm.
This is the simplest method when you want to shut down a responsive phone or when pressing and holding the Side key opens a different feature. Samsung notes that interface wording and layout can vary by software version.
Use the Side and Volume down keys
- Press and hold the Side key and Volume down key together until the power menu appears.
- Tap Power off, then confirm if prompted.
The key combination opens the power menu; selecting Power off is still necessary to shut the phone down. Samsung’s support guidance describes this menu route for Galaxy devices.
If the Galaxy S22 is frozen
A long hold of Side and Volume down has a different purpose when the phone is unresponsive: Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance says to hold both keys for more than seven seconds to force a restart. This restarts the device; it does not leave it powered off. After the phone starts and responds, use either shutdown method above and choose Power off.

Samsung also publishes region-specific troubleshooting that describes holding the keys for up to 60 seconds for some Galaxy devices. That timing should not be treated as a universal Galaxy S22 instruction. If the S22 remains frozen or the standard steps fail, consult Samsung support for guidance appropriate to your device and region.
Why holding the Side key may not show the power menu
The Side key’s press-and-hold behavior can be assigned to another feature. If that happens, use the Quick panel power icon instead. Samsung’s Galaxy S23-series manual documents an option to assign press-and-hold to the Power off menu, but that manual is for a newer model; the setting and its path are not confirmed here for every Galaxy S22 software version.
