The Nikon Z 6II remains a capable full-frame mirrorless camera for photographers who value a balanced stills-and-video setup, in-body stabilization, and two-card flexibility. Its 24.5MP sensor, dual card slots, and burst shooting make it versatile, but its 4K 60p mode uses an 8-bit DX crop, and its autofocus and viewfinder should be judged against current alternatives rather than assumed to lead the class. Whether it is a good buy depends on your lenses, workflow, and the price and condition of the particular body.

What is the Nikon Z 6II?

The Z 6II is a 24.5-megapixel FX-format mirrorless camera built around Nikon’s Z mount. Nikon specifies a 35.9 × 23.9 mm CMOS sensor, dual EXPEED 6 processors, and five-axis sensor-shift vibration reduction. Compatible lenses with optical VR can work with the in-body system. The body weighs about 615 g on its own, or about 705 g with battery and card, excluding the body cap. Nikon’s specifications list those figures.

DPReview characterized the model as a subtle update to the original Z6, adding capabilities while retaining a broadly similar stills-and-video feature set. Its 2020 review is useful historical context, not a current head-to-head assessment. Read DPReview’s Z6 II review.

Is the Nikon Z 6II still worth buying?

It can suit photographers who want a full-frame hybrid body with stabilization and a practical dual-card workflow, particularly if they already own compatible Nikon lenses. It is also worth considering for video creators who are comfortable with the limitations of its 4K 60p mode. The right decision depends on the actual asking price, used condition, shutter count, warranty, and what accessories are included; current prices and stock are not established here.

No current side-by-side tests or measured image-quality results are available here, so do not treat this as proof that the Z 6II beats a particular alternative. Compare autofocus generation and tracking, video crop and bit depth, card workflow, lens compatibility, handling, and total used-body condition before choosing.

How good is the Z 6II autofocus?

Nikon lists 273 focus points in FX single-point mode and people and animal detection for both stills and video. Its stated photo-mode detection range is −4.5 EV to +19 EV under specified conditions; low-light AF extends the lower end to −6 EV. These are manufacturer sensitivity specifications, not guarantees of focus acquisition or tracking success with every subject, lens, or shooting situation. See Nikon’s AF specifications.

DPReview described autofocus improvements over the original Z6, including additional face- and eye-detection choices within Wide-area AF, while discussing behavior in the context of the competition at the time. Real-world hit rate also depends on subject movement, focus-area choice, lighting, and lens-motor response, so the specification alone cannot settle whether it will meet a particular action-photography need.

What burst rate can it actually deliver?

Nikon advertises up to approximately 14 frames per second, but that maximum is tied to specific settings: Continuous H extended and single-point AF on Nikon USA’s product page. Nikon’s specifications give a buffer of approximately 124 shots for a particular 12-bit lossless-compressed RAW and CFexpress configuration. Neither figure should be assumed for every autofocus mode, file format, or card. Nikon USA’s product page and Nikon’s specifications describe the conditions.

Does the Nikon Z 6II shoot 4K 60p?

Yes. Nikon lists 4K UHD at 60p, but this mode records in 8-bit and uses a DX crop rather than the full FX sensor area. That distinction matters if you expect full-frame field of view or need more latitude for grading. Nikon also lists N-Log and HLG external-recording workflows and optional RAW output; requirements can vary with firmware, recorder, service, and region. Check the applicable setup details before buying equipment or planning a production. Nikon’s video specifications.

What memory cards does the Nikon Z 6II use?

The camera has one CFexpress Type B/XQD slot and one UHS-II-compatible SD slot. Nikon says users can assign either slot as primary or backup, separate RAW and JPEG files across cards, or copy files between them. Nikon lists the slot options; its dual-card guidance explains the available workflows.

  • PROFESSIONAL 4K VIDEO CAPABILITIES: Record UHD 4K video with full pixel readout and Full HD video at up to 120p for slow-motion playback. Advanced video tools include N-Log, HLG HDR recording support, 10-bit HDMI output, Focus Peaking, Zebra Display, microphone input, headphone monitoring, and compatibility with external recorders, making this camera a powerful solution for filmmaking, livestreaming, and professional video production.
  • 5-AXIS IN-BODY IMAGE STABILIZATION: Built-in 5-axis Vibration Reduction helps reduce camera shake when shooting handheld for sharper images and smoother video footage. The stabilization system works with compatible NIKKOR Z lenses and adapted F-mount lenses when paired with the optional FTZ adapter, giving photographers and videographers greater flexibility across a wide range of shooting environments.

This mixed format can be useful for redundancy, but it means budgeting for two different media types if you want a matched backup setup. Card choice also affects performance: Nikon’s approximately 124-shot buffer figure applies to a named 12-bit lossless-compressed RAW and CFexpress configuration, not every card and recording mode.

Can you use Nikon F-mount lenses on the Z 6II?

F-mount NIKKOR lenses require an FTZ-series adapter; Z-mount NIKKOR lenses attach natively. Compatibility and functions can vary by lens. Nikon USA’s guidance specifies FTZ adapter firmware v1.10 or later for its stated compatibility information, so check the exact lens and adapter before assuming autofocus or other features will work. Nikon’s FTZ compatibility guide is the place to verify older lens combinations.

Battery, grip, and firmware

The supplied battery is the EN-EL15c. Nikon also lists EN-EL15b, EN-EL15a, and EN-EL15 as usable, with fewer pictures per charge. The optional MB-N11 grip adds vertical controls; Nikon’s stated 1.9× battery-performance comparison is for two EN-EL15c batteries in the grip versus one EN-EL15c in the camera body. Nikon also lists the MB-N10 battery pack. Nikon USA’s product information.

Firmware availability changes. Nikon’s download center search result listed C firmware 1.70 dated June 3, 2025; consult the live Z 6II download page for the current release and installation information rather than assuming that version remains the latest.

Nikon Z6 vs. Z6 II: what changed?

The Z 6II is an incremental refinement, not a wholly different camera concept. DPReview’s 2020 review identifies dual processors, two card slots, an optional full battery grip, and incremental autofocus changes among the updates. The clearest practical advantages are added workflow flexibility from the second slot and the refined feature set; the core proposition remains a well-rounded full-frame stills-and-video camera. The following comparison is limited to differences established in that review rather than a full specification-by-specification comparison.

Area Z6 II change noted by DPReview
Processing Dual processors
Card workflow Two card slots
Grip option Optional full battery grip
Autofocus Incremental improvements, including face- and eye-detection options within Wide-area AF

DPReview’s review is dated 2020, so its competitive comparisons should not be read as a verdict on newer cameras.

Who should choose the Z 6II?

  • Nikon DSLR owners: It may provide a route to a Z-mount body while retaining some existing F-mount lenses through an adapter, subject to compatibility.
  • Photographers who need card redundancy: The CFexpress/XQD and UHS-II SD combination supports backup and file separation, though the media workflow has a cost and format trade-off.
  • Hybrid shooters: The camera offers 4K modes and external log/HLG workflows, but 4K 60p’s crop and 8-bit recording are central limitations to weigh.
  • Action specialists or demanding video users: Compare current autofocus tracking and video capabilities directly rather than relying on a 2020 review or headline burst/video figures alone.
