If you pressed the red SYNC button on the remote to check its battery, four flashing blue Player LEDs mean the battery is at full strength. If the lights keep flashing while you are trying to connect the remote, synchronization has not completed. Once a standard sync succeeds, the blinking stops and one Player LED stays lit.
What the flashing lights mean
The same four blue lights can indicate different things in different situations:
- After pressing the remote’s red SYNC button: The LEDs show battery strength. Nintendo says four flashing lights indicate full strength; one indicates the lowest level. This is a battery-level indication, not a precise percentage.
- While trying to connect the remote: The remote has not synced successfully yet. Nintendo Support explains that flashing lights indicate it has not been able to sync with the Wii console.
After a successful standard sync, blinking stops and one Player LED remains illuminated to show the player number, from 1 through 4.
Check the batteries
To check battery strength on the remote, remove its battery cover and press the red SYNC button inside the compartment. Read the number of flashing Player LEDs: four indicates full strength, while one indicates the lowest strength. You can also view the battery bars in the Wii HOME Menu under Wii Remote Settings.

If the remote is struggling to connect, try fresh batteries before troubleshooting further. If you use rechargeable batteries, Nintendo recommends NiMH batteries and advises following the battery manufacturer’s safety and usage instructions.
Sync the Wii Remote with the console
- Turn on the Wii console.
- Open the cover over the console’s SD Card Slot.
- Press and release the red SYNC button inside the Wii Remote’s battery compartment. Its Player LEDs will blink.
- While the remote’s lights are still blinking, quickly press and release the red SYNC button inside the console’s SD Card Slot area.
- Wait for the blinking to stop. One lit Player LED indicates the assigned player number.
Repeat the sync process for each additional remote. Nintendo notes that some applications may prevent extra remotes from syncing; if the attempt fails, exit the application and try again.

If the lights keep flashing
Try fresh batteries and sync again
Replace the batteries with fresh ones, then repeat the standard sync sequence. Make sure you press the console’s SYNC button while the remote’s LEDs are still blinking.
Test another Wii Remote
If you have another remote, try syncing it with the same console. If the second remote works, Nintendo’s guidance is that the first remote needs replacement. If neither remote syncs, the console could be at fault; a failed sync by itself does not prove which device is defective.

Check service availability before replacing the console
Nintendo’s support information says it no longer accepts service requests for certain Wii console models: RVL-001, RVL-101, and RVL-201, subject to the serial-prefix details on its support page. Check the listed model and serial information before pursuing service.
