Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMediaTek’s Dimensity 9300 challenged the usual flagship-phone CPU formula: instead of pairing a few large cores with small efficiency cores, it used four Arm Cortex-X4 performance cores and four Cortex-A720 cores. The idea was that larger cores could finish some tasks sooner and return to an idle state, potentially saving energy. That is a design hypothesis—not a guarantee of longer battery life in every phone.
What changed in the Dimensity 9300
The defining change was the CPU core mix. The Dimensity 9200 used one Cortex-X3, three Cortex-A715 and four Cortex-A510 cores. The 9300 replaced that arrangement with four Cortex-X4 cores and four Cortex-A720 cores, omitting the small Cortex-A510 cores.
That made the 9300 an “all-big” design, sometimes described as “bigger.big.” In a traditional big.LITTLE layout, smaller cores handle lighter work while larger cores are reserved for demanding tasks. MediaTek instead bet that a larger core could complete certain tasks quickly enough to reduce the time a phone spends actively processing them.
Why remove the small cores?
A core’s power draw while working is only part of the energy cost of a task. If a larger core finishes a burst of work sooner, the phone may be able to return to a low-power state earlier. Whether that saves energy depends on the task, software scheduling, chip behavior and the phone’s implementation.

The approach may be less advantageous for sustained or real-time workloads, where the processor has little opportunity to finish early and idle. The architecture alone therefore cannot establish that a Dimensity 9300 phone will have better battery life than a phone using a different design.
What MediaTek claimed about performance and power
At launch, MediaTek said the Dimensity 9300 could deliver a 40% increase in peak performance, 15% more performance at equal power, or 33% lower power at equal performance compared with the previous generation. These are company-reported comparisons, not independent test results; each figure describes a different comparison condition.

Jim McGregor’s November 17, 2023, EE Times analysis discussed the chip’s design and launch-era claims. It did not provide controlled head-to-head tests against competing flagship chips or measurements from named retail phones.
Other reported Dimensity 9300 capabilities
The 9300 combines CPU cores with graphics, AI processing, imaging, memory support and wireless connectivity. The figures below are those reported in the EE Times analysis; they describe launch-era specifications or MediaTek claims, not guaranteed performance in a particular handset.

What the on-device AI figures do—and do not—mean
MediaTek predicted support for AI models of up to 13 billion parameters. The 2023 article said other mobile vendors appeared to view 7 billion to 10 billion parameters as a near-term on-device target. Those were launch-era expectations, not a statement of current industry consensus.
Parameter count by itself does not establish how quickly a model will run or how useful it will be on a phone. Performance also depends on factors such as the model, memory needs, software and handset implementation. The article’s under-one-second Stable Diffusion result is a reported claim, not an independent test or a guarantee for every image-generation workload.

The trade-off: larger cores can cost more
Larger CPU cores can take more chip area, adding potential cost. The article said TSMC’s 4-nm+ process offset some of that cost, but the overall effect on MediaTek’s margins remained unclear. Chip cost alone also does not determine a phone’s retail price.

The Dimensity 9300 arrived amid intensifying competition among flagship mobile-chip makers and weak smartphone shipments. Its “all-big” CPU was a bid to challenge conventional assumptions about balancing performance and efficiency, while its graphics, AI, imaging and connectivity features broadened the competition beyond CPU core counts.

The useful comparison questions are how chips perform under sustained workloads, how much power they use at matched tasks, how they behave thermally in actual phones, and what graphics or AI performance remains available under real memory and network conditions. The cited analysis supplies architecture details and attributed company claims, but not independent answers to those comparisons.
Availability: treat launch forecasts as historical
The 2023 article forecast Dimensity 9300 phones in Asia, Europe and other markets, while expressing uncertainty about U.S. carrier availability. It named no handset model and does not establish current availability, stock or regional distribution. To identify a phone using the chip, check the handset maker’s current specifications or a reliable retailer listing and confirm the chipset model explicitly.
