First remove the shelf assembly from the refrigerator; then separate the glass only if its rear retainer clips are designed to come out. Samsung makes some shelves as nonseparable units, so if your shelf has no removable clips, do not pry the glass from its frame.
Before you start: check the shelf design
Removing the complete shelf and separating its glass are two different steps. Samsung provides a procedure for taking out the shelf above the crisper drawers, but the exact layout and release tabs vary by refrigerator model. For the glass, look for removable clips at the back left and right corners, where the glass meets the plastic frame.
- Rear clips are present: You can release them and gently lift the glass from the frame.
- No removable clips: Stop. Samsung says some shelves are not designed to come apart, and trying to separate the glass may damage the shelf.
If your shelf or its release points do not match the instructions below, check the user manual for your refrigerator model before proceeding. Samsung’s general instructions for removing the shelf above the crisper drawers are at Samsung Support.
Remove the complete shelf from the refrigerator
- Remove the crisper drawers beneath the shelf.
- Release the shelf from the drawer divider and, if present on your model, the water-filter housing.
- Lift the shelf slightly while pulling it out. Angle one side down if necessary to clear the refrigerator opening.
- Set the shelf on a clean, flat surface before attempting to work on the glass.
Separate glass from a shelf with removable clips
- Turn the shelf over so you can reach the underside.
- Find the retainer clips at the rear left and right corners.
- At one rear corner, press the clip tab nearest the center while slightly lifting that corner of the shelf. Remove the clip, then repeat on the other side.
- Once both clips are out, gently raise the glass and separate it from the frame. Do not force it if it does not lift freely.
- To reassemble, return the glass and clips to their original positions in reverse order.

If the glass does not separate
Do not pry under the glass or try to remove the frame by force. Some Samsung shelves have no removable retainer clips because the glass is not meant to separate; forcing it can physically damage the shelf. Samsung advises soaking such a shelf in a water-and-bleach solution if debris is trapped. If cleaning still does not work, the shelf may need replacement. See Samsung’s shelf cleaning guidance for its instructions.
Find the right replacement shelf
If the shelf is damaged or cannot be cleaned adequately, identify a replacement using the refrigerator’s complete model code, not appearance alone. Samsung Canada’s shelves-and-drawers support overview points to model-based parts lookup. Confirm that a replacement is compatible with your exact refrigerator model before ordering; a glass-only pane is not established as a fit across Samsung models.
