Emerson announced the NI mioDAQ USB data acquisition family on September 17, 2024, expanding its NI USB DAQ line. The four listed models range from 16-bit units for lower-cost or higher-channel-count needs to 20-bit models with higher per-channel sampling rates. Which one fits depends on the exact input count, resolution, sampling mode, and I/O your application requires—not the family’s headline maximums.
What Emerson announced
Emerson’s September 17, 2024 announcement described NI mioDAQ as a bus-powered USB DAQ family with USB Type-C connectivity. Emerson highlighted QR-code-guided setup and support for FlexLogger Lite, LabVIEW and LabVIEW+, plus development in C/C++, C#, Python, and other languages.

The announcement described family-level ceilings of up to 32 analog inputs, four analog outputs, 16 flexible digital lines, and four counters. It also cited up to 16 channels at 20-bit resolution and one million simultaneous samples per second. These are not specifications shared by every model: the 642x models are 16-bit, while the 645x models are 20-bit, and their channel counts at the higher rates differ.

How the four listed models differ
NI’s current mioDAQ catalog labels the models “Lowest Cost,” “More Channels,” “Better Measurement,” and “Highest Performance.” The table summarizes the listed distinctions. Maximum sample-rate figures are qualified as shown; consult the model’s detailed specifications for the conditions and sampling modes that apply.
| Model | Catalog positioning | Resolution and listed maximum rate | Analog inputs | Analog outputs | Digital I/O |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| USB-6421 | Lowest Cost | 16-bit; 250 kS/s maximum on one channel | 16 single-ended or 8 differential | 2 | 16 lines |
| USB-6423 | More Channels | 16-bit; 250 kS/s maximum on one channel | 32 single-ended or 16 differential | 4 | 16 lines |
| USB-6451 | Better Measurement | 20-bit; 1 MS/s/channel, with the stated maximum rate across 8 channels | 16 single-ended or 8 differential | 2 | 16 lines |
| USB-6453 | Highest Performance | 20-bit; 1 MS/s/channel, with the stated maximum rate across 16 channels | 32 single-ended or 16 differential | 4 | 16 lines |
NI notes that the USB-6451 and USB-6453 also offer a multiplexed mode for higher channel counts; consult the catalog’s manual links for the applicable details. Do not interpret the 1 MS/s/channel figure as applying to all 16 channels on every model or mode.
What the USB-6453 specification adds
NI’s USB-6453 product page provides more detail for that model specifically. It lists 16 simultaneous-sampling ADCs, four selectable input ranges from ±200 mV through ±10 V, and 32 single-ended or 16 differential analog inputs. It also lists four ±10 V analog outputs with a 250 kS/s/channel update rate, 16 digital I/O lines, and four counters. Do not assume these model-page details apply to the other three models.
The same page identifies an OEM board-only variant with 50-pin board-level connectors, distinct from the enclosed version with spring terminals. If enclosure, connector type, signal range, or configuration matters, confirm the precise part number and current model documentation before ordering or designing a harness.
What applications NI lists—and when to consider another platform
NI lists low-voltage measurement and signal-generation scenarios for mioDAQ. Its examples include measuring ±10 V signals, sensor outputs within that range, voltage drops across shunt resistors, battery-cell voltages within a ±10 V peak measurement, and power rails on USB- or battery-powered designs. Other listed uses include pulse and event counting, encoders, potentiometers, low-voltage current sensors, and low-voltage potential transformers. These are manufacturer-listed applications, not independent validation for a particular sensor or test setup.
For outputs, NI lists generating analog or digital signals, controlling an external relay, PWM, simulated signals, clocks, triggers, and connecting LEDs. Check the selected model’s electrical limits and documentation before connecting a device; a listed use case does not establish compatibility with every component.
NI describes CompactDAQ as a more rugged, modular platform, with modules for sensors such as IEPE accelerometers, microphones, strain gauges, and load cells. It points to CompactDAQ for mechanical testing, PC sensor logging, shock and vibration tests, and acoustic measurements. NI describes PXI DAQ as an option for greater speed and channel expansion in larger systems. The choice is therefore not simply “which mioDAQ model”: sensor conditioning, ruggedness, modularity, and system scale may point to a different platform.

Emerson says a QR code on the device directs users to a setup page with the pin map, manual, drivers, setup videos, and other technical documents. The announcement and NI catalog describe USB-C connectivity; NI specifies a locking screw. NI says each device includes a 2 m USB-C-to-USB-C cable with locking screw, spring terminals with backshells for strain relief, and an NI screwdriver.
NI lists support for the NI-DAQmx driver across the mioDAQ family, along with FlexLogger Lite, LabVIEW integration, and documented APIs with examples for Python, C/C++, C#, and other languages. Emerson’s release also mentions LabVIEW+. Emerson said its Python package was available as open source through GitHub and included more than 50 example programs.
NI’s catalog says Smart ID pin and user LED software support are coming in a future driver release. Treat those as planned rather than available capabilities unless the current driver documentation confirms otherwise. NI also lists DIN-rail and rack-mount kits, replacement USB-C cables, backshells, spring-terminal connectors, and a screwdriver replacement; fit varies by model and part number, so check the current parts list.
Quick Recap
What to verify before choosing a model
- Input count and connection mode: establish how many signals you need and whether you will wire them single-ended or differentially.
- Resolution and rate together: match the 16-bit or 20-bit model to the required measurement resolution, then confirm the sampling rate for the number of channels and mode you will use.
- Signal range and front end: check the exact model’s input ranges and whether the device suits the sensor or measurement circuit; the USB-6453’s published ranges should not be generalized to the family.
- Outputs and timing I/O: confirm the number and electrical characteristics of analog outputs, digital lines, and counters required for your task.
- Hardware configuration: verify enclosed versus OEM board-only construction, connector style, included accessories, and any mounting accessory’s compatibility.
- Software and calibration: confirm current NI-DAQmx and application-software support, and consult the model’s calibration documentation. Emerson’s release refers to guaranteed specifications for two- and 10-year calibration cycles, but the specific calibration conditions and requirements are not detailed here.
