If Windows logs “Windows failed fast startup with error status 0xC00000D4,” the event is a clue, not a confirmed diagnosis. The Microsoft documentation reviewed does not map this status to a specific cause or code-specific fix. If Windows still starts normally, record the event and check for related symptoms before changing settings. If the PC will not boot, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and try Startup Repair.

What does error status 0xC00000D4 mean?

The available Microsoft guidance explains how Fast Startup works and how to troubleshoot Windows startup problems generally, but it does not identify 0xC00000D4 as a specific failure or prescribe a fix for it. Avoid treating the status alone as proof of a failing drive, bad memory, malware, or a defective driver.

Fast Startup saves the Windows kernel session and loaded device drivers to hiberfil.sys when you shut down, then reuses that state on a later startup. Microsoft explains: “During Fast Startup, the kernel session is not closed, but it is hibernated.” A restart performs a full boot cycle instead. Microsoft’s Fast Startup documentation covers Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 shutdown or hibernation failures, including different statuses such as C0000034 and C004002D. Its discussion of those errors is not evidence that they explain 0xC00000D4.

How to interpret Kernel-Boot Event ID 29

Event ID 29 is a Kernel-Boot event, but the event ID and status should be read with the full event details and the symptoms on that specific PC. One user-posted Event Viewer record reports Kernel-Boot Event ID 29, FailureStatus 3221225473 (0xC0000001), and the message “A fatal error has occurred while processing the recovery data.” That is one reported instance, with a different status; it does not establish a general explanation for 0xC00000D4. If Windows still starts

  1. Capture the full event. In Event Viewer, open the relevant Kernel-Boot event and record its General and Details information, including the event time, status, and message.
  2. Check nearby System log entries. Look around the same time for related boot, shutdown, freeze, or restart errors. Microsoft’s Windows startup troubleshooting guidance organizes problems by observed symptoms rather than treating one event as a diagnosis.
  3. Note what the PC actually does. Determine whether startup is slow, shutdown fails, the computer restarts repeatedly, freezes, or displays a blue or black screen. If none of these is happening, the logged event alone does not establish that the PC needs repair.

If Windows will not start

Use WinRE to try built-in recovery options. Startup Repair can attempt to address certain startup problems, including missing or damaged system files, corrupted Boot Configuration Data (BCD), a damaged master boot record (MBR), incompatible drivers, or registry errors. It may not resolve every cause; if it cannot repair startup, it provides a report of what it found. Follow Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions.

  1. Enter Windows Recovery Environment. If it appears after failed starts, choose its recovery options; otherwise use available Windows recovery or installation media to reach WinRE.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair, then follow the prompts.
  3. If the issue began after a recent Windows update, consider Uninstall Updates from Advanced options. Other choices, such as System Restore, Reset, or reinstalling Windows, depend on what is available and can have different effects on files and apps.

Back up important files before recovery when possible, and keep the BitLocker recovery key available if the device is encrypted. Microsoft outlines the choices and their trade-offs in Recovery options in Windows.

Choosing a recovery option

Situation Option to consider Important consideration
Windows starts, with no other clear symptoms Record the event and inspect nearby System log entries. The event alone does not prove a fault requiring recovery.
Windows does not start Try Startup Repair in WinRE. It targets certain startup problems; it is not a guaranteed fix.
The boot problem began after an update Consider Uninstall Updates in WinRE. Use this when the timing makes an update relevant; available choices vary.
A restore point is available Consider System Restore. Check Microsoft’s recovery guidance for how the option affects the system.
Built-in recovery does not resolve the problem Consider Reset or reinstalling Windows. These are more disruptive and can affect personal files or apps; review the option’s impact and back up first when possible.
No recovery drive is available and the PC cannot start Create Windows installation media on another working PC. Microsoft specifies a USB drive of at least 8 GB. Existing suitable media may work; manufacturer recovery media may provide hardware-specific drivers and factory applications.

When to get further help

If the computer remains unbootable after appropriate built-in recovery attempts, contact the PC manufacturer or a qualified repair service. A concrete hardware or configuration error in the logs may also justify technical diagnosis. The 0xC00000D4 event by itself is not enough to conclude that paid repair is necessary.
