Use the Side and Volume Down keys for a quick screenshot, or open the Quick Panel and tap Screen Recorder on a supported device. The exact options depend on your Galaxy model and software version.
Take a screenshot on a Galaxy phone or tablet
Use the hardware keys
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- Press the Side key and Volume Down key at the same time, then release them.
- Find the screenshot in Gallery. If the screenshot toolbar appears, use its controls to crop or draw, add a tag, share, or capture more of a scrollable page.
Samsung also lists gestures, Smart Select, and S Pen input as alternative screenshot methods where supported. For a long page, tap the scroll-capture control in the screenshot toolbar; it is available only when the device and screen support it. Some apps block screenshots because of copyright restrictions. Record the screen
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick Panel. Swipe down again if needed to expand it.
- Tap Screen Recorder. If prompted, choose the offered sound setting and start recording.
- Use the on-screen controls to manage the recording. Depending on the device and software, you may be able to annotate or show a selfie-video overlay.
- Stop the recording when finished, then open Gallery to view it.
If Screen Recorder is not among the Quick Panel buttons, open the panel’s edit controls—usually labeled Edit buttons or shown as an edit option—and look for it in the available-buttons list. If it is not available there, your model or software may not support the feature.
Change screenshot and recording settings
On supported devices, open Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recordings. Menu labels and available settings vary by model and software version. Depending on the device, you may be able to select recording sound, video quality or size, selfie-video size, and whether taps or touches appear in the recording. Samsung Ireland documents the default recording folder as Internal storage > DCIM > Screen recordings; it says the save location can be changed in settings. Check whether your Galaxy supports the feature
Screen Recorder and individual screenshot methods are not available on every Galaxy device. Samsung’s Ireland support page lists supported Galaxy S, Note, and Z series models, plus certain tablet and A series models; consult its current model list and check your device’s software because support varies. Samsung’s supported-device information is the relevant reference.
Samsung says some apps restrict screenshots or screen recording for copyright reasons. Its U.S. guide also says Screen Recorder does not record phone calls, VoIP calls, or video calls. A blocked or blank capture therefore does not necessarily indicate a fault with the phone. See Samsung’s U.S. limitations.

Samsung Ireland’s support article gives limits for specific older software: up to one hour or 4 GB on Android 10 with One UI 2.5, and no file-size or recording-time limit on Android 11 with One UI 3.0 or later. These are version-specific statements in that guide, not a universal limit for current Galaxy devices. Samsung Ireland’s version details.

- Look for the recorder in Quick Panel editing: add Screen Recorder from the available-buttons list if it appears there.
- Check device and software support: Samsung notes that availability depends on model and software version, and its support pages may describe different menus.
- Check for an update: Samsung documents checking Galaxy Store’s updates list, or going to Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recordings > About Samsung capture and selecting Update if offered. Samsung Canada’s update instructions provide this route.
- Consider app restrictions: if capture fails only in a particular app or content area, copyright-related restrictions may be the reason.
For screenshots, choose the method that fits the task: the hardware keys capture the current screen, scroll capture extends a supported screenshot down a page, and gestures, Smart Select, or S Pen can offer alternatives on compatible devices. For video, Screen Recorder is the built-in option when present; choose the available audio and quality settings before recording.
