In Firefox 148 and later, open Menu > Settings > AI Controls. Turn on Block AI enhancements to block the Firefox AI features covered by that panel, or set an individual feature to Blocked. To remove only the sidebar assistant, block AI chatbot in sidebar.
Block Firefox AI features on Windows 11
- Update Firefox if needed. The AI Controls panel is available in Firefox desktop starting with version 148. If you cannot find it, update Firefox and check again. Mozilla’s instructions cover desktop Firefox and do not specify a different path for Windows 11. Mozilla’s AI Controls guide was last updated August 11, 2026.
- Open the Firefox menu and select Settings.
- Select AI Controls in the Settings navigation.
- Choose the scope you want:
- Turn on Block AI enhancements to block the current and future features covered by AI Controls. This also stops pop-ups promoting those features.
- To block specific features only, find each feature in the panel and set its dropdown to Blocked.
When you block an individual feature, Firefox removes its entry point and prevents its use. If it relies on an on-device AI model, Firefox also removes the downloaded model. Labels or menu placement may vary with localization or future Firefox updates.
Remove only the sidebar AI chatbot
In Settings > AI Controls, find AI chatbot in sidebar and set its dropdown to Blocked. Mozilla’s Firefox Support thread also identifies this control for Firefox 148; the selected answer was posted March 2, 2026.
What Firefox AI Controls block—and what they do not
AI Controls manage Firefox’s generative AI features. Mozilla lists examples including translations, PDF image alt text, speech recognition, AI-enhanced tab groups and the sidebar chatbot; the exact list can change. Traditional machine-learning features that classify, rank or personalize are outside this panel.

The setting does not disable AI services that websites or extensions use independently. Mozilla specifically notes that extensions can still use third-party AI services even when Firefox AI enhancements are blocked. See Mozilla’s explanation of the limitation.
Block Smart Window if it appears
If Smart Window is available in your AI Controls panel, set its dropdown to Blocked. Mozilla says Firefox uses a Classic window when Smart Window is blocked or unavailable. Its Smart Window guide describes a limited language and geographic rollout, so the option may not appear for every user.
