Sony and Panasonic’s 1TB-disc work refers to Archival Disc, a professional optical-storage format—not a newly announced consumer movie Blu-ray. The companies announced the standard in 2014, setting 300GB as its initial capacity and describing 500GB and 1TB as later roadmap steps. Those plans do not establish that a 1TB disc is available to buy today.

What is Sony and Panasonic’s Archival Disc?

Archival Disc is an optical-disc standard Sony and Panasonic developed for professional long-term data storage. The companies announced it on March 10, 2014, after a basic development agreement the previous year. Their stated goal was to address growing archival-storage needs, rather than to replace consumer movie Blu-ray. Sony and Panasonic’s 2014 announcement

Panasonic describes the intended data as “cold”: information that is accessed infrequently but must be retained. Its account of a freeze-ray system uses magazines holding twelve 300GB write-once discs, or 3.6TB per magazine. That is an archival-storage arrangement, not a stack of movie discs for a living-room player. Panasonic Newsroom Global

How did the capacity reach 1TB?

The 1TB figure belongs to a development roadmap. Sony and Panasonic’s 2014 announcement set 300GB per disc as the initial system target and said they planned to increase capacity to 500GB and 1TB. Their later white paper described a 300GB first generation, a 500GB second-generation target after fall 2018, and a third generation above 1TB. A 2023 IEEE roadmap depicts that third generation at 1TB. These documents describe targets, not proof that a 1TB Archival Disc reached retail. 2014 announcement · Archival Disc white paper, second edition · IEEE International Roadmap for Devices and Systems, 2023

Consumer Blu-ray example 25GB Sony USA gives 25GB as a Blu-ray capacity example; this does not establish compatibility with Archival Disc. Sony USA support

Archival Disc second generation 500GB Described as a later-generation target in the companies’ white paper; it is not evidence of current retail availability. Archival Disc white paper, second edition
Archival Disc third generation Above 1TB in the white paper; 1TB in the 2023 IEEE roadmap Roadmap capacity only; the cited sources do not establish a 1TB disc for sale. Archival Disc white paper, second edition · IEEE, 2023

How does the 300GB disc store more than a regular Blu-ray?

The announced 300GB design is double-sided, with three recording layers on each side. Sony and Panasonic specified 405nm optics, a 0.85 numerical aperture, a 0.225-micrometer track pitch and a 79.5nm data bit length. The announcement also names Reed-Solomon error correction, crosstalk cancellation and high-order PRML signal processing as parts of the system. Sony and Panasonic, 2014

The capacity increase is not simply a matter of adding layers. The white paper describes recording on both groove and land tracks and using crosstalk cancellation to support denser tracks. For the 500GB generation, it identifies inter-symbol interference elimination; for the third generation, it points to multiple-level recording and playback, alongside high signal-to-noise-ratio optical technology. Can a regular Blu-ray player read or write Archival Disc?

Compatibility is not established by the cited materials. Sony and Panasonic describe a professional standard with its own disc specifications and recording system, but do not say that ordinary consumer Blu-ray players or burners can read or write Archival Disc. Do not assume that a Blu-ray device can handle it merely because both use optical discs or share Blu-ray technology heritage.

Is a 1TB Blu-ray disc available to buy?

The available evidence does not establish current retail availability of a 1TB Archival Disc. Panasonic says it began mass producing 300GB Archival Discs in 2016 and describes a 12-disc, 3.6TB magazine system. That is Panasonic’s account of a professional archive deployment, not confirmation of a consumer 1TB product or ordinary retail sale. Panasonic Newsroom Global
