To block someone in WhatsApp, open their chat or contact details, choose Block, and confirm. On iPhone, you can also add a saved contact from WhatsApp’s blocked-contacts settings. Blocking stops direct messages and calls, but it does not remove the contact or hide that person’s messages in a group you both share.
Block someone from a WhatsApp chat
Menu labels can vary by app version and device. Open the conversation with the person, then tap or click their name or open the chat menu to find the blocking control. Choose Block and confirm when prompted. WhatsApp documents chat-based blocking for saved contacts and unknown numbers; on web or desktop, use the chat menu or contact details shown in your client.
iPhone: add a saved contact from Settings
- Open WhatsApp and tap Settings or your profile picture.
- Tap Privacy, then Contacts, then Blocked.
- Tap Add New, select the contact, and tap Block.
WhatsApp also provides ways to block from a chat’s information or the chat list. For current platform-specific instructions, see WhatsApp’s guide to blocking and reporting someone.
Unknown numbers and businesses
You can block an unknown number from its WhatsApp chat. If you think the messages are spam or abusive, choose the separate report option as well. Blocking a saved contact does not delete that person from your phone’s address book; remove the address-book entry separately if that is also what you want.

What happens when you block someone
The blocked person can no longer send you WhatsApp messages or call you, and you stop receiving their status updates. They cannot see your last seen, online status, status updates, or changes to your profile photo, according to WhatsApp’s explanation of reporting and blocking.
The block does not delete your existing conversation, remove the person from your phone contacts, or remove you from their contacts. The chat stays in your list unless you archive or delete it separately. Blocking is reversible, but unblocking does not restore messages, calls, or status updates sent while the person was blocked.

Blocking, reporting, and removing a chat are different
| Choice | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Block | Stops direct WhatsApp messages and calls from that account and limits its access to specified profile and status information. | Does not delete your chat or remove the phone contact. |
| Report | Sends an account or group to WhatsApp for review. WhatsApp says a report can include up to five of the latest messages and, when relevant, basic information about up to five recent calls, plus account or group identifiers and message metadata. The reported user or group is not notified. | Does not by itself stop messages, calls, or status updates, and does not guarantee WhatsApp will ban the account or take further action. |
| Archive | Hides the conversation from the main chat list. | Does not block the person or remove the conversation. |
| Delete chat | Removes the conversation from your chat list. | Does not block the person or delete the contact from your phone address book. |
For unwanted or abusive content, you can block and report in the same flow when that option appears. Reporting a group has an additional effect: WhatsApp says you will be removed from it, and rejoining requires an invitation from a group admin. Use WhatsApp’s in-app reporting flow and review its reporting and blocking details.
Blocking does not hide messages in a shared group
WhatsApp states, “You can’t block a group.” If you and the blocked person remain in the same group, you can still see one another’s messages there. To stop sharing that conversation, leave the group; blocking the group’s admin is a separate action. See WhatsApp’s group-safety guidance.
