Keep Windows and the apps you use often on the SSD, and use the HDD for large or less frequently accessed personal files when its extra capacity is useful. Windows lets you choose where new content is saved, move existing personal files, and optimize each drive using the appropriate method. The best split depends on your drive capacities and how you use your PC; Microsoft does not prescribe a universal allocation or promise a specific speed improvement.
1. Identify each drive before changing storage
In Windows 10, open Settings > System > Storage to review available drive and usage information. Windows can show details such as drive type, capacity, and current use. Drive letters like C: and D: are labels, not proof that a volume is an SSD or HDD, so confirm the drive’s identity before moving or deleting files. Menu labels can vary by Windows 10 build. Microsoft’s Storage settings guidance describes the available information and controls.

2. Decide what belongs on the SSD and HDD
A practical arrangement is to keep Windows and frequently used applications on the SSD, then place large media files, archives, and other personal files you access less often on the HDD. This is a flexible storage choice, not a Windows requirement: consider the capacity of each drive and which files you need readily available. Microsoft’s guidance supports choosing storage locations, but does not establish a benchmark or ideal SSD-to-HDD capacity ratio.
| Storage location | Useful for | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Internal SSD | Windows, frequently used apps, and files you want on the system drive | Installed in the PC |
| Internal HDD | Large personal files, media, and archives that benefit from its additional capacity | Installed in the PC |
| External drive | Infrequently used files or extra space when Windows says an update needs it | Files are available while the drive is connected |
3. Choose where Windows saves new content
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Find the control for changing where new content is saved.
- Choose an available drive for each listed content type. A drive may need to be connected before it appears as an option.
This setting directs supported new content to the selected drive; it does not automatically relocate Windows, installed programs, or every existing file. For the precise Windows 10 controls, see Microsoft’s Storage settings guidance.

- INDUSTRY DEFINING RELIABILITY: Meet the demands of every task from everyday computing to 8K video processing, with up to 2,400 TBW
- MORE COMPATIBLE THAN EVER: 870 EVO has been compatibility tested for major host systems and applications, including chipsets, motherboards, NAS, and video recording devices. Interface- SATA 6GB/s, compatible with SATA 3GB/s and SATA 1.5GB/s interfaces
4. Move existing personal files safely
- Open File Explorer and look for large personal files or folders, especially videos, music, pictures, and downloads.
- Choose or create a clearly named destination folder on the HDD, such as D:Media or D:Archives, adjusting the drive letter to match your PC.
- Move the selected personal files to that folder.
- Open a sample file from the new location and confirm the expected data is present before deleting any leftover original copy.
Do not move Windows system folders or program folders by dragging them in File Explorer. Microsoft’s guidance covers moving personal files, not relocating the operating system or installed programs this way. Microsoft’s free-space guidance includes moving personal files to another drive or external storage.
5. Let Windows optimize both drive types
Windows uses different operations for HDDs and SSDs. HDD optimization includes defragmentation; SSD optimization uses trim, which tells the drive which data blocks are no longer in use so it can handle cleanup when idle. The built-in utility applies the appropriate operation under the general label of drive optimization.

- Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
- Search the taskbar for Defragment and Optimize Drives and open the result.
- Select a drive to review its status.
- Leave Windows’ scheduled optimization enabled unless you have a specific reason to change it. Windows generally optimizes drives automatically, with a weekly default schedule.
You do not need to run a separate third-party defragmenter on an SSD or disable Windows optimization as a blanket rule. See Microsoft’s drive optimization guidance.
6. Free up space without removing something you need
Storage Sense and cleanup recommendations can remove selected temporary files or other content based on your choices. Review the categories before you run a cleanup. In particular, deleting the previous Windows installation removes the option to return to that earlier version. Microsoft explains the cleanup choices in its Windows 10 free-space guidance.

What Storage Sense does to files on another drive
Microsoft’s Windows 10-specific documentation says Storage Sense runs only on C: and ignores other locations such as D:. Its OneDrive Files On-Demand cleanup can make eligible inactive cloud files online-only; files marked as always available remain local. Do not assume that running Storage Sense will clean up your HDD. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance.

An external drive can hold infrequently used files or provide extra space when Windows reports that an update needs it. Files on that drive are available only while it is connected. The required capacity, portability, interface, and compatibility depend on your files and PC; Windows’ guidance does not identify a particular model or minimum capacity. Microsoft’s free-space guidance describes external storage as an option for moving personal files or addressing an update space warning.

Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. Organizing storage does not restore Windows 10 security support. Check Microsoft’s Windows 10 support information for lifecycle details.
