This message means an application hit an exception it did not handle; it does not, by itself, identify a Windows fault or a universal fix. Protect any unsaved work, capture the dialog’s Details, then restart or update the affected application. If the message returns, send the exception information and the action that triggered it to the app’s publisher.
What the error means
An exception is an error condition encountered while a program runs. Microsoft’s .NET guidance explains that exceptions can result from a fault in the program or a library it calls, an unavailable operating-system resource, or another unexpected runtime condition. If the application does not handle the exception, it may terminate. Microsoft’s .NET exception documentation describes the general behavior; it cannot identify the cause in a particular app.
The familiar dialog is therefore a symptom, not a diagnosis. The same wording has appeared in reports involving different applications, so it does not prove that Windows, .NET, or any one shared component is damaged. A Microsoft Q&A user report reproduces the dialog’s Continue and Quit wording, but that report is an example of a user’s case, not evidence of a universal cause: Microsoft Q&A.
What to do when the dialog appears
- Record the context. Note the exact application name and the action immediately before the message appeared—for example, opening a file or selecting a particular feature. Include whether this is the first occurrence or happens repeatedly.
- Protect unsaved work. If the application still responds, save your work before deciding whether to continue. Continue means the application will attempt to proceed; it does not repair the exception. If the app is unstable or the work is saved, choose Quit to close it. The dialog wording is reproduced in a Microsoft Q&A user report.
- Open Details and preserve the full text. Copy or take a screenshot of the exception type, message, and stack trace. If shown, retain module or assembly information too. These details identify where the failure surfaced and give the app’s publisher more to investigate; they do not necessarily name the root cause.
- Restart the application. Close it and reopen it, then check whether the same action triggers the message again. If it does, note the result rather than assuming the restart fixed the underlying issue.
- Check the application publisher’s update or repair guidance. Use instructions for the affected app, not a generic repair recipe. If the error persists, contact the publisher or its support channel with the app name, triggering action, whether it repeats, and the complete Details text.
How to narrow down the cause
Use the pattern of failures to organize the information you share; none of these observations alone proves a cause.

- One app or several? If the error occurs in one application, start with that app’s publisher and its exception details. If multiple applications are affected, report that distinction to support rather than assuming a particular Windows component is responsible.
- Does one action trigger it? A repeatable sequence gives support a useful lead. Record the steps and whether the error appears every time or intermittently.
- Did it start after a change? Note any recent application or system change and when the problem began. Timing can help focus investigation, but does not establish that the change caused the exception.
- What do the Details show? The exception type, message, stack trace, and any module or assembly context are more useful for investigation than the headline alone. Share the complete text instead of trying to infer a fix from one line.
Why there is no one Windows fix
Microsoft’s documentation describes several possible sources of exceptions, and the dialog’s headline does not distinguish among them. The evidence available from the message alone does not justify a registry edit, broad system change, reinstall of .NET, or third-party repair utility as a default solution. Use the affected application’s publisher guidance and the specific exception details to determine an appropriate next step.
For developers: Windows Forms exception handling
The dialog is often associated with .NET Windows Forms, but its behavior depends on where an exception occurs. Microsoft documents that the default Windows Forms dialog behavior applies to unhandled exceptions on threads owned by Windows Forms through Application.OnThreadException. Exceptions on other threads follow the AppDomain.UnhandledException path.

Microsoft’s SetUnhandledExceptionMode documentation says to configure the mode before creating the first application window. A global unhandled-exception handler is not a general mechanism for safely resuming execution: Microsoft’s .NET Framework 4.8.1 example notes, “Since UnhandledException cannot prevent an application from terminating, the example simply logs the error in the application event log before termination.” That guidance concerns logging before termination, not recovering from arbitrary failures.
