It does not clone Windows or move all your apps, files, settings, or credentials. Plan those separately.
What UniGetUI can—and cannot—move
UniGetUI is a free graphical interface for package managers. It can discover, install, update, uninstall, bulk-manage, export, and restore packages available from supported sources. Its project documentation describes those features at the official UniGetUI repository.
For a PC move, the key feature is a bundle: a small JSON file listing packages you can carry to the new computer and use to reinstall selected software. The bundle is not a copy of the applications themselves, and restoring it depends on packages being available through the sources you use.
- It can help reinstall: apps represented by packages available from supported package sources.
- It does not transfer: personal documents, photos, or other files; nor does it promise to move every app, browser extension, profile, license, or Windows setting.
- Some apps still need manual installation: examples include certain OEM utilities, specialized software, and applications absent from the package sources.
UniGetUI cautions that packages are supplied by third parties and recommends installing only software from trusted publishers. Check the publisher before installing a package.

Before you start: decide how to move your files
Keep the application plan separate from the data plan. Cloud sync can make personal files available on the new PC, but syncing files does not transfer installed desktop apps.
| Option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud sync, such as OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox | You already use an account and want files to sync to the new PC. | Confirm the right folders are syncing, the account is accessible, and there is enough available storage. |
| External storage | You prefer an offline copy or do not have a cloud account with enough capacity. | Copy the files you need and keep the drive available while setting up the new PC. |
Windows Backup may also help with relevant settings and files for users signed in with a Microsoft account and using OneDrive. It is not a substitute for checking that the files and applications you need are covered.

Export a package bundle from the old PC
- Review installed apps. Remove software you no longer need and make a separate note of apps that may not appear in package sources, such as OEM utilities or specialized tools.
- Choose your file-transfer method. Start cloud sync or copy files to external storage; do not expect the UniGetUI bundle to contain personal data.
- Install UniGetUI. The project recommends the Microsoft Store on Windows and documents other installation options in its official repository. To install with WinGet, open a terminal and run
winget install --exact --id Devolutions.UniGetUI --source winget. - Create and save the bundle. In UniGetUI, make a bundle from the installed packages available from WinGet sources, then save the resulting JSON file.
- Move the JSON file somewhere accessible. Use a flash drive or a cloud location you can reach from the new PC. Keep it distinct from your personal-file backup.
Install the selected apps on the new PC
- Set up the PC first. Sign in, run Windows Update, and install UniGetUI using the same project-supported options.
- Open the saved bundle. Select the packages you want to install rather than assuming every listed item is still needed.
- Approve elevation when required. Some package installers need administrator permission. If you decline an elevation prompt, that installation may fail; review the prompt and publisher before approving it.
- Finish the parts the bundle does not cover. Sign in to your password manager and browser accounts, resume cloud sync or restore files from external storage, and manually install apps that were not included.
Check WinGet and installation permissions
Microsoft documents WinGet as available with App Installer on Windows 11 and modern Windows 10. The command-line tool supports Windows 10 version 1809 or later; availability also depends on App Installer. Microsoft notes that after first sign-in, initial registration may happen asynchronously. If the command is not recognized immediately on a newly set-up PC, allow registration to complete and try again. See Microsoft’s WinGet documentation for current platform and usage details.
Not every installation is unattended: some installers require elevation, and declining the permission prompt can prevent that package from installing. Treat each package as a third-party install and verify its publisher.

What a careful migration checklist looks like
- Remove apps you no longer use and identify anything that will need a separate installer or license.
- Choose cloud sync or external storage for personal files; verify the files are available before wiping or retiring the old PC.
- Export the UniGetUI package bundle and put the JSON file somewhere the new PC can reach.
- On the new PC, finish Windows updates, restore the selected packages, and handle any permission prompts deliberately.
- Restore files and accounts, then check that important apps, settings, and data are present before disposing of the old computer.
In a September 23, 2026 ZDNET article, Ed Bott described his checklist’s goal as helping readers “migrate my files, apps, settings, and credentials quickly and completely.” UniGetUI addresses the package-reinstallation part of that broader move; the separate steps above are what keep files, accounts, and out-of-source applications from being overlooked.
