HDMI is the connection; ARC is an audio-return feature that uses an HDMI connection to send sound from a TV to a soundbar or AV receiver. ARC is not a different connector. If you are comparing audio capabilities, the more useful comparison is often ARC versus eARC, its higher-bandwidth successor.
What HDMI and HDMI ARC mean
HDMI is the digital interface used to carry audio and video between devices. Audio Return Channel (ARC) adds a way for a television to send audio back through an HDMI cable to a connected soundbar or AV receiver. That is useful for sound from the TV’s own apps or tuner, as well as audio routed through the TV from another source.
As HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. explains, “eARC enables the audio to a TV that originates from cable, satellite, streaming or source devices to be sent to an AVR or sound bar through a single HDMI cable.” HDMI’s eARC overview describes the enhanced version of this return-channel function.
ARC vs. eARC: what changes?
eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) provides greater bandwidth than ARC. HDMI’s consumer guidance says eARC can pass higher-bandwidth and uncompressed audio that ARC cannot. That can matter for formats such as Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X, Dolby Atmos, and uncompressed multichannel sound. These are eARC capabilities, not a guarantee that every TV, soundbar, receiver, app, or source supports every listed format.

| Feature | ARC | eARC |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Returns TV audio to a sound system over HDMI | Returns TV audio with enhanced bandwidth |
| Audio handling | Supports audio formats within ARC’s capabilities; it cannot pass eARC’s higher-bandwidth, uncompressed audio | Supports higher-bandwidth and uncompressed audio, depending on device and content support |
| Maximum figures stated by HDMI | Not stated on HDMI’s eARC page | Up to 192kHz, 24-bit and 32-channel uncompressed audio, per HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc.’s eARC page accessed in 2026 |
The figures in the eARC column describe specification capability, not what a particular product will deliver. The TV, sound system, source, app, and content all affect the result. eARC also does not automatically make stereo or every streaming program sound better; the benefit depends on the audio signal and equipment.
How to connect a TV to a soundbar or receiver
- Find the HDMI socket on the TV labeled ARC or eARC/ARC.
- Connect it to the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI port labeled for TV ARC or TV eARC, using an HDMI cable.
- Check the TV and audio-system manuals for supported return-channel modes and audio-output settings. If there is no sound, first verify that both ends are connected to the labeled ARC/eARC ports, then consult the manuals for model-specific settings and troubleshooting.
This connection carries TV audio to the external sound system over HDMI, so a separate optical audio cable may not be needed. The exact setup and available settings depend on the models involved; there is no single troubleshooting sequence that applies to every TV and sound system.

Will ARC and eARC devices work together?
Do not assume that a port label alone proves that every feature or audio format will work across your equipment. Check the manuals for both the TV and the soundbar or receiver to confirm their return-channel support and the formats you want to use. The available official guidance does not establish a complete compatibility matrix across brands and models, so device-specific behavior must be verified for the products in your setup.
If both devices support eARC and you need its higher-bandwidth formats, use their eARC ports. ARC remains a practical option for audio formats it supports. When comparing equipment, check whether your sound comes from TV apps or tuners or from a source connected to the TV, and verify format support across the full chain.

Which HDMI cable do you need?
Choose a cable based on the features and recommendations for the connected devices; an ARC/eARC setup does not automatically require a premium cable. HDMI Licensing Administrator says cable products are required to carry the official cable name on the jacket, while packaging displays the cable-name logo and/or an appropriate certification label. See its HDMI cable types and labeling guidance when checking a cable.
The Ultra High Speed HDMI or Ultra96 cable requirement described in HDMI’s HDMI 2.2 overview applies in that specification’s context; it is not a universal rule that every ARC or eARC user must buy a new high-tier cable. Follow your devices’ manuals for the features you intend to use.
