Google said it had no evidence that its systems were compromised. In September 2014, Russian media reported that 4.93 million names and passwords had appeared on a Russian Bitcoin forum. That was a reported list size—not proof that five million active Gmail accounts were breached or taken over, and the people responsible were not established.

Was Gmail hacked?

Not according to the evidence Google cited at the time. A Google representative told CBS, “We have no evidence that our systems have been compromised.” Google believed the credentials likely came from phishing or malware, and may have included outdated information. The reports do not establish who obtained or posted them, so describing the incident as a confirmed direct Google breach goes beyond what was known.

The headline figure was also easy to misread. CBS reported that Russian media said 4.93 million names and passwords were posted. “Five million” is a rounded description of that reported scale; it is not a verified count of active Gmail accounts, unique users, valid passwords, or successful account takeovers. Forbes relayed Google’s estimate that fewer than 2% of the combinations might have worked. That was an estimate, not a confirmed tally of compromised accounts. CBS’s 2014 report and Forbes’s account of Google’s estimate describe the contemporaneous claims.

Were your Gmail credentials exposed?

The public reports do not provide a reliable way to determine whether any particular reader’s credentials were in the list. The reported total cannot answer that question, and the sources do not establish a verified list of affected active accounts. Treat the incident as a reminder to secure an account if a password was reused or may have been entered on a deceptive site—not as evidence that every Gmail user was affected.

How to check and protect your account safely

Do not type your password into an unfamiliar site that claims to check whether it appeared in a leak. CBS warned readers about purported exposure-checking sites. Use account security features provided by Google instead; Google’s current guidance covers 2-Step Verification, passkeys, Password Manager, and Password Checkup. These are present-day options, not a description of the response Google took in 2014. See Google’s 2-Step Verification guidance, passkey guidance, Google Password Manager, and Password Checkup.

Choose protection that fits your devices and recovery needs

  • 2-Step Verification: Adds a second sign-in check beyond the password. Consider which verification methods you can reliably access and keep recovery options current so losing a phone does not lock you out.
  • Passkeys: Let supported devices or security credentials authenticate without entering a conventional password, and are designed to resist phishing. Confirm that your devices and the services you use support them, and plan how you will recover access if a device is lost.
  • Password Manager and Password Checkup: A password manager can help create and store unique passwords; Password Checkup can help identify weak or exposed saved passwords. These tools reduce the risks of password reuse, but they do not replace account recovery planning or additional sign-in protection.
  • FIDO2 security key: An optional physical key can provide a phishing-resistant sign-in factor. It requires compatible devices and access to the key; consider a backup key or another recovery method before relying on one.

For any password you reused on other sites, change it there as well and give each account a distinct password. If you suspect someone has accessed your Google Account, review its security activity and devices through Google’s account security settings, then update recovery information you control.
