“Dead” is a provocation, not a literal forecast. Noah Davis’s September 28, 2026, Web Designer Depot article argues that AI is changing the value of routine implementation—boilerplate, standard components, and familiar HTML, CSS, and JavaScript work—not eliminating the broader job of building useful, reliable software. Whether AI makes a developer faster depends on the task, the developer, the tools, and how productivity is measured.

What “traditional web development is dead” means

Davis’s argument is about a shift in emphasis: spend less of a developer’s effort manually producing routine code and more on deciding what to build, shaping the system, understanding users and business needs, integrating tools, and checking the result. He frames higher-level abstractions and AI assistance as leverage for that work, rather than proof that developers are no longer needed.

The article recommends learning architecture, infrastructure concepts, product judgment, and business problem-solving, as well as auditing and debugging generated code. It also points to AWS as an example of infrastructure abstraction and names Ruby on Rails, Django, and Next.js as frameworks; those references are examples, not endorsements.

Davis also imagines founders shipping apps over a weekend and a single person building and scaling products for thousands. Those are the article’s claims about what may be possible, not measured outcomes established by the evidence cited here. Likewise, Davis’s line, “The tools have changed. The leverage has increased. The game has evolved,” expresses his opinion rather than a research finding.

Is web development dying because of AI?

The available U.S. employment outlook does not show the occupation disappearing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 5% employment growth from 2025 to 2035 for the combined category of web developers and digital designers, with about 13,600 openings per year on average. The BLS says e-commerce expansion supports demand, while better tools and increased AI use may soften growth. These are U.S. projections for a combined occupational category, not a causal estimate of AI’s effect on web developer jobs. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Web Developers and Digital Designers

That outlook is useful context, not a guarantee of any individual role’s future. It supports a narrower conclusion: web development remains an occupation in the BLS’s projection, while the tasks and skills employers value may shift.

Does AI make web developers more productive?

There is no single productivity figure that applies to every developer or project. Two prominent 2025 studies reported different results because they examined different people, settings, tools, and outcomes.

Study What it measured Reported result Important limit
METR, July 2025 Time to complete randomized, prespecified tasks in mature repositories familiar to experienced open-source developers Participants took 19% longer when AI was allowed 16 experienced developers completed 246 tasks using tools primarily including Cursor Pro with Claude 3.5/3.7 Sonnet, representative of the February–June 2025 frontier. This is a specific result for that group and setting, not an estimate for all coding work. METR study
Microsoft Research, June 2025 Completed task counts across randomized field experiments at Microsoft, Accenture, and an unnamed Fortune 100 company 26.08% more completed tasks, with a standard error of 10.3%, across three experiments involving 4,867 developers Participants had access to an AI coding assistant with code-completion suggestions. The task-count measure differs from METR’s task-time measure; the summary also reports greater adoption and larger gains among less experienced developers. Microsoft Research summary

The results are not direct contradictions. METR studied experienced contributors changing code in repositories they already knew and measured time on defined tasks. Microsoft Research combined three company field trials and counted completed tasks. More completed tasks and less time per task are different outcomes, and neither figure alone establishes whether code was correct, maintainable, secure, or economical to review.

METR’s February 2026 update cautioned that its later experiment was a poor proxy for AI’s true productivity impact. It cited selection effects, including participants opting out of working without AI, and difficulty measuring time when multiple agents ran concurrently. METR said it believed developers were likely more sped up in early 2026 than in early 2025, but described that as weak evidence about the size of the change—not a clean, universal speedup estimate. METR’s February 2026 update

Why code output is not the same as productivity

A tool can produce more code, suggestions, or task completions without creating an equivalent increase in useful, finished work. METR cautions that lines of code and task counts can move without a comparable change in completed value. Productivity claims are more informative when they account for the actual goal, correctness, maintainability, security, and the human effort needed to review and repair output.

Web Design with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery Set
  • Brand: Wiley
  • Set of 2 Volumes
  • A handy two-book set that uniquely combines related technologies Highly visual format and accessible language makes these books highly effective learning tools Perfect for beginning web designers and front-end developers
  • Task and codebase: A small, unfamiliar exercise is not the same as maintaining a mature application someone knows well.
  • Participant: Experience, familiarity with the project, and prior use of the tool can affect results.
  • Tool and timing: Code-completion assistants and agentic systems are not interchangeable, and capabilities change over time.
  • Outcome: Time, task counts, code volume, and self-reported productivity measure different things.
  • Quality and review: Initial output does not establish correctness or how much checking, debugging, and maintenance it will require.

What should web developers learn now?

Davis’s practical advice is to build skills around the decisions and responsibilities that remain important when routine code is easier to produce. Treat this as a direction for learning, not a guarantee of career security.

  • Architecture and systems: Learn how components, services, data, and infrastructure fit together so you can make sound design choices and understand the effects of changes.
  • Product and business judgment: Get better at identifying user needs and deciding which problems are worth solving before implementation begins.
  • AI integration: Learn to use coding assistance in context, rather than assuming any one tool will improve every task.
  • Review and debugging: Verify generated code, diagnose failures, and assess whether a proposed change is safe and maintainable.

The useful shift is not from “coding” to “not coding.” It is from treating implementation as the whole job to combining implementation with judgment, system understanding, and responsibility for the result.
