Effective email marketing starts with permission, relevant messages, and reliable sending—not simply uploading a list. Choose a platform by checking how many active contacts and monthly emails its free plan allows, plus whether you need automation, signup forms, landing pages, or a small website. Free-plan details change, and the available evidence does not establish an independently tested ranking of five best providers.

Build an email list with permission

An address is not permission to send marketing. Add people who have agreed to receive your messages, and keep a record of how and when they subscribed. Mailchimp says consent is required for marketing contacts and links permission practices with avoiding bounces and abuse complaints; Brevo likewise recommends emailing only people who agreed to receive messages. Both are provider recommendations, and the legal requirements that apply depend on where you and your recipients are located. See Mailchimp’s compliance guidance and Brevo’s deliverability guidance.

Consider double opt-in, in which a new subscriber confirms the address through a follow-up email. Brevo recommends it as a way to reduce fake addresses, bots, and spam traps. It adds a step before subscription, so make the confirmation message clear and easy to act on.

Send relevant messages at a steady pace

Segment contacts so each person receives messages suited to their interests or relationship with your business. Sending every campaign to the entire list can reduce engagement and increase complaints. Brevo recommends focusing on recently engaged contacts and separating people who have not engaged in the previous three to six months for a re-engagement flow. That interval is Brevo’s recommendation, not a universal cutoff.

Set a cadence you can maintain, and avoid sudden jumps in volume after a long pause. If you have been inactive, resume gradually rather than sending a large backlog of campaigns at once. Make the value of each message clear: for example, a creator might send new-work updates to followers who asked for them, while a small business might send product news only to relevant customers.

Set up a trustworthy sending identity

Use a professional address on a domain you control rather than a free personal mailbox, and authenticate that domain with the DNS records your email platform specifies. Brevo’s sender guidance describes DKIM and DMARC and summarizes requirements associated with Gmail, Yahoo, and Microsoft. Mailchimp’s best-practices page says a published DMARC record is required for senders sending more than 5,000 emails to Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook addresses in 24 hours. These are provider summaries whose scope can depend on sender type and mailbox-provider rules; consult current requirements from the mailbox providers and your platform before changing DNS.

Brevo describes bulk senders as those sending more than 5,000 messages per day and discusses aligned sending domains for the relevant dedicated-IP case. Do not treat that description as a universal threshold for every authentication obligation. Review Brevo’s sender requirements alongside Mailchimp’s best practices and the current guidance from the mailbox providers you target.

Prepare, test, and monitor every campaign

Write useful, brand-consistent copy that works on mobile. Mailchimp advises testing content and links before sending and avoiding excessive capital letters, exclamation points, and gimmicky wording. Brevo recommends useful, mobile-friendly content and a visible, working unsubscribe link in every marketing email. These are sound operating practices, not guarantees of inbox placement.

  • Send a test message and check it on a phone and desktop.
  • Open every link, confirm the destination, and check that the unsubscribe route works.
  • Review the recipient segment, subject line, sender name, and message before scheduling.
  • After sending, monitor opens, clicks, hard and soft bounces, spam complaints, and unsubscribes.

Brevo says a hard bounce rate above 2%, unsubscribe rate above 1%, or spam complaint rate above 0.2% can lead to suspension of a Brevo account or campaign. These are Brevo’s own operational thresholds, reviewed in 2026, not universal industry benchmarks. Its separate summary of Gmail, Yahoo, and Microsoft sender requirements says to stay under a 0.3% spam complaint rate; that mailbox-provider summary is distinct from Brevo’s account-suspension threshold.

Compare free email marketing tools by fit

“Free” can mean a continuing plan with caps, a restricted feature set, or a trial. Before signing up, check the provider’s current official pricing page for active-contact and monthly-send limits, any daily sending cap, automation, forms and landing pages, branding or template restrictions, reporting, integrations, and what happens when you exceed a limit. Match those terms to your list size and the number of messages you expect to send. The details below reflect the evidence available on October 4, 2026; volatile plan terms should be confirmed on the linked live provider pages.

Platform What is established about the free option What to verify before choosing
MailerLite MailerLite’s update says that, effective June 16, 2026, its Free plan includes 250 active subscribers and 2,500 monthly emails. It also lists up to three automations, three forms, one digital product, one landing page, and one website of up to five pages. Confirm the current plan details and any other feature restrictions on the MailerLite Free Plan page. MailerLite says that exceeding the contact or send limit pauses sending and some account functions until you upgrade or get below the limit. See its free plan update FAQ.
Brevo The cited Brevo sources establish deliverability and sender guidance, not a current free-plan contact cap, email allowance, or feature set. Check Brevo’s official pricing interface for current caps, automation, forms, reporting, and what happens when a limit is reached.
Mailchimp The cited pricing page is live, but the captured information does not establish a complete current free-tier comparison. Confirm the current contact and send caps and feature availability directly on Mailchimp’s pricing page before importing contacts or building a workflow.
Other free providers No current, sourced plan limits or feature details are established here for additional providers. Compare each provider’s official pricing page using the same criteria; do not assume a free plan is ongoing or includes a particular cap or feature.

MailerLite is the only provider in this comparison for which the available evidence establishes dated free-plan caps and feature allowances. Brevo and Mailchimp have useful cited operational guidance, but the cited material does not establish enough current free-tier detail for a like-for-like ranking. There is therefore no evidence-based five-provider “best” ranking here. Choose based on the plan terms you verify and the workflow you actually need, rather than a ranking label.

Know when to upgrade—and handle compliance carefully

A free plan may be enough while your list and send volume remain within its caps and its feature set supports your workflow. Revisit the plan when you approach a limit, need more automation or landing pages, or rely on reporting or integrations the free tier does not provide. For MailerLite, the stated consequence of exceeding either the contact or email limit is paused sending and some account functions until the limit is resolved by upgrading or reducing usage.

Legal obligations vary by jurisdiction and can depend on the message and recipient. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s CAN-SPAM compliance resource says commercial email marketers have seven things to know, but consult the FTC’s full guidance for the actual requirements. This is not legal advice and U.S. rules should not be assumed to apply worldwide.
