If your LG TV has a black screen, start with a power reset—not a factory reset. Unplug the TV, hold its physical Power button for about 10 seconds, reconnect it, and turn it on. A factory reset requires a working on-screen menu and erases apps and personal settings, so first check whether the TV can display an overlay and whether the problem is an input, connected device, or cable.
Try a power reset without using the screen
LG’s no-picture/no-sound troubleshooting sequence uses the TV’s physical controls, so you can try it even when you cannot see the menu. This power reset is different from restoring the TV to factory settings.
- Disconnect the TV’s power cable from the TV or the wall outlet.
- Press and hold the physical Power button on the TV for about 10 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cable and turn on the TV.
These steps follow LG’s no-picture and no-sound troubleshooting guidance. If the screen is still black, use the clues below before considering a menu-based reset.
Use on-screen clues to check the source
See whether a volume bar appears
Press a volume button on the remote. If the volume bar appears, the TV can display an on-screen overlay; investigate the connected device, selected input, and cables before assuming the TV itself needs a factory reset. If no overlay appears, LG says the issue may be with the TV.

Check for “No Signal” and inspect HDMI connections
If “No Signal” appears, confirm that the TV is on the input connected to your device and that the device is powered on. Disconnect and securely reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends. A loose HDMI connection is one possible cause of a dark picture, but LG does not describe buying a new cable as a general fix; consider replacement only if the existing cable appears damaged.

Choose the right kind of reset
LG describes three different reset actions. Their usefulness depends on whether the screen and menus work and whether the symptom suggests a settings problem rather than an external connection or possible hardware fault.

LG’s instructions for factory resetting an LG TV and performing an A/V reset vary by model and webOS generation. An AV reset is not a way around an unusable display.

Factory-reset menu paths by webOS generation
If the picture returns and you can navigate the menus, LG’s U.S. guidance lists these paths. The wording can vary for particular models, so consult the manual for your exact TV if you do not see the stated options.

Before you confirm
- A full reset removes installed apps and personal settings or saved data.
- Do not unplug or turn off the TV while the reset is in progress.
- If the menu path differs, use the instructions for your model rather than guessing through settings.
When to contact LG support
If the TV remains on with a blank screen and shows no messages after the power reset and basic input and cable checks, a factory reset is not a dependable next step: it requires a usable menu and does not establish that a hardware fault will be repaired. LG says a persistently blank screen may need professional inspection. Contact LG Customer Support for guidance.
