A regulator’s headline accuracy figure is not the same as the worst-case accuracy of the finished power supply. To estimate the output-voltage range your load may actually see, use guaranteed limits under your design’s input-voltage, load-current, and temperature conditions, then account for the reference or feedback network and other specified error terms.

What output-voltage accuracy actually includes

Output accuracy is a system-level question. The regulator’s reference or feedback accuracy is only one contributor; line regulation, load regulation, external resistor tolerances, and temperature-related changes can also move the output. Texas Instruments’ Power Tip #18 discusses these contributions together.

Distinguish the terms before adding them to an error budget:

  • Reference or feedback accuracy describes how closely the regulator’s internal reference or feedback circuitry sets the output to its target.
  • Line regulation describes output change as the input voltage changes.
  • Load regulation describes output change as the load current changes.
  • External-network error applies to adjustable designs: the tolerance and temperature behavior of the feedback or sampling resistors affect the output set point.
  • Temperature drift and long-term stability describe changes over temperature and time. They are separate considerations, not synonyms for initial accuracy.

Analog Devices lists initial accuracy, temperature coefficient, long-term stability, and noise as distinct voltage-reference specifications, and notes that temperature-induced changes can overshadow tight initial accuracy. See its voltage-reference selection guidance.

Use limits that match your actual operating conditions

Read the test conditions alongside every accuracy number. A limit specified at room temperature, a particular input voltage, or a narrow load range does not automatically bound performance across a wider design envelope. Check whether the figure is a guaranteed minimum or maximum, or only a typical value, and whether the conditions cover the input, current, and temperature extremes your circuit must tolerate.

For example, TI’s LM317A comparison states conditions of input voltage from 8 V to 24 V, output current from 10 mA to 1.5 A, junction temperature of 25°C, and nominal output of 3.3 V. TI reports output deviation of 54.8 mV for the LM317A and 219 mV for a typical linear regulator in that comparison. These figures apply to that specific comparison and its stated conditions; they are not universal specifications or a general ranking of regulator families.

As TI puts it in its regulator guidance, “When choosing a linear voltage regulator for a given application, there are three datasheet specifications that must be scrutinized in order ensure output voltage stability: load regulation, line regulation and reference voltage accuracy.” The three terms matter together, but the relevant values are the ones specified for the conditions your design uses.

Estimate the output range step by step

  1. Define the required output range. Record the lowest and highest voltage your load can accept, rather than relying only on the nominal target.
  2. Write down the operating envelope. Identify the minimum and maximum input voltage, load current, and temperature relevant to the design.
  3. Find matching guaranteed limits. In the regulator datasheet, locate output-voltage or reference limits and the line- and load-regulation specifications. Confirm that their stated test conditions cover the operating envelope you need to assess.
  4. Include the set-point network. For an adjustable regulator, propagate reference or feedback error through the resistor ratio. Include the external resistors’ tolerances and temperature coefficients.
  5. Account for temperature effects. Use applicable temperature-drift limits across the intended range; do not treat room-temperature initial accuracy as a full-temperature guarantee. Consider long-term stability separately when the application depends on accuracy over time.
  6. Combine terms as the datasheet directs. Use the manufacturer’s specified method and distinguish guaranteed limits from typical values. Do not present an estimate assembled from typical figures as a guaranteed worst-case bound.

The result is an estimate bounded by the specifications and conditions used, not a measurement of a particular assembled board. Wiring, connectors, PCB traces, and measurement-instrument accuracy can also affect a real system; the cited regulator and reference guidance does not quantify those additional effects.

Compare regulators on more than a headline accuracy number

When evaluating actual options, compare their limits against the same design conditions. Accuracy figures are useful only alongside the conditions and other constraints that determine whether a part fits.

Comparison point What to check
Output accuracy Guaranteed output-voltage range across the required temperature range, not just initial or typical accuracy.
Line regulation Output change across the input-voltage range the design will use.
Load regulation Output change across the required load-current range.
Reference and feedback network Reference accuracy plus, for adjustable designs, resistor tolerance and temperature coefficient.
Specification conditions Whether each value is guaranteed or typical, and the input, load, and temperature conditions attached to it.
Other design constraints Dropout, current capacity, noise, thermal dissipation, and stability requirements. These affect regulator suitability but do not replace the accuracy calculation.

Why the accuracy may be better—or worse—than the headline suggests

A single reference-accuracy figure can make the output appear less predictable than it is if other specified terms and the resistor network are overlooked. Conversely, a tight initial figure can understate total error if line or load variation, temperature drift, or resistor behavior is omitted. The useful answer is not a more reassuring adjective; it is an output range derived from applicable limits and a clearly stated operating envelope.
