The Logitech G309 LIGHTSPEED is a mid-range wireless gaming mouse built around three choices: use its fast 1 kHz LIGHTSPEED connection or slower Bluetooth, keep the replaceable AA battery for an 86 g setup, or add Logitech’s separately sold POWERPLAY system to run without the AA at a listed 68 g. Its sensor and switches are capable on paper, but the 1 kHz polling-rate ceiling and reviewer-reported scroll-wheel and grip concerns matter if you are choosing it specifically for competitive FPS play.
What the G309 offers
Logitech lists the G309 (model MR0109) as a dual-wireless mouse with six programmable buttons, a HERO 25K sensor, and LIGHTFORCE hybrid optical-mechanical switches. The manufacturer specifies a 100–25,600 DPI range, tracking above 400 IPS, and zero smoothing, acceleration, or filtering. These specifications describe capability; they do not establish how the shape or clicks will feel in every hand.
Logitech lists dimensions of 120 × 64 × 39 mm. RTINGS describes the shape as egg-like and symmetrical, similar to the G305, but with a more pronounced rear hump and flatter sides. Shape is personal: if possible, compare the contour and hump position with a mouse you already find comfortable.

How the wireless modes differ
| Connection | Report rate listed by Logitech | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| LIGHTSPEED high mode | 1 kHz (1 ms) | The faster listed mode for gaming. |
| LIGHTSPEED low mode | 125 Hz (8 ms) | A lower-report-rate LIGHTSPEED mode. |
| Bluetooth LE | 125 Hz (8 ms) | Useful for connecting to another compatible device without using the LIGHTSPEED receiver. |
Report rate is how often the mouse reports its position to the connected device. The 1 kHz maximum is adequate for many players, but it is not a high-polling-rate design. TechRadar flags that ceiling as a possible limitation for some FPS buyers, while RTINGS points to lighter alternatives with higher polling rates. Those trade-offs matter more if you specifically want the highest-end competitive specification than if you mainly want responsive wireless play and the option of Bluetooth.

Battery, weight, and POWERPLAY
The G309’s default power setup uses one replaceable AA battery. Logitech lists the mouse at 86 g with an AA and 68 g with POWERPLAY and no AA. POWERPLAY is a separately sold wireless charging system, not an included mouse accessory; the lighter configuration therefore requires extra hardware and cost. Tom’s Hardware measured about 85.6 g with an AA and 66.5 g with a POWERPLAY puck on its review units, which is close to but not identical with Logitech’s listed figures.

Logitech’s 2024 estimate is over 300 hours on one AA alkaline battery in LIGHTSPEED at a 1 ms report rate, or over 600 hours in Bluetooth. These are manufacturer runtime claims, not independently established guarantees; actual life can vary with battery and use. TechRadar’s reviewer reported about a 5% battery decline over almost a week using both modes, but that is a single reviewer’s experience rather than a controlled or universal runtime result.
For a straightforward lightweight configuration without buying POWERPLAY, the G309 is not especially light: its listed AA setup is 86 g. If you already own compatible POWERPLAY hardware, or value its charging setup enough to purchase it, the listed 68 g battery-free configuration is a meaningful alternative. Logitech’s launch announcement listed a suggested U.S. retail price of $79.99 in July 2024; that is historical launch MSRP, not a current price. Retail pricing, stock, and regional availability vary.

What reviewers say about feel and controls
Reviewer impressions broadly support the idea that the G309 is responsive, but they also identify tactile details worth weighing. Tom’s Hardware describes the main switches as crisp and clicky, while finding the scroll wheel somewhat stiff and the sides slippery; it reports that the included grip tape helped. These observations reflect that outlet’s review unit and preferences, not a universal fit verdict.
RTINGS tested the black version and frames the mouse as a mid-range option whose shape and weight should be weighed against lighter, higher-polling alternatives. The listed sensor and switch specifications do not settle whether the mouse’s contour, wheel resistance, or side grip will suit you.

RTINGS describes the G309 as lighter than the G305 and equipped with a newer sensor and optical switches. Both use AA batteries, but RTINGS notes that the G305 lacks the G309’s Bluetooth and POWERPLAY support. The right choice depends on whether those additions justify the price difference where you shop, and whether the G309’s particular shape fits you.

Is the G309 worth it?
The G309 makes the most sense if you want both LIGHTSPEED and Bluetooth, prefer the convenience of a replaceable AA, and are comfortable with a listed 1 kHz maximum report rate. Its long stated battery estimates and POWERPLAY option offer flexibility, but the mouse’s weight advantage depends on buying that separate system. If you want a very light mouse out of the box or a polling rate above 1 kHz for competitive FPS play, compare alternatives on those exact points before choosing. If you are deciding between the G309 and G305, Bluetooth and POWERPLAY support are the clearest differentiators; fit and current local price should settle the rest.
