The right fix depends on which problem you have. If you forgot the screen credential and no previously configured unlock option is available, regaining access may require a factory reset that erases data.
First, identify what kind of lock you mean
- Forgotten screen PIN, pattern or password: This is a device-access problem. Check for an already configured trusted-device or trusted-location unlock state; otherwise, a reset may be required.
- Carrier or network lock: This restriction concerns which mobile network the tablet can use. Contact the network provider or retailer that supplied it.
- Frozen or unresponsive tablet: A restart may resolve a temporary problem, but it will not remove a forgotten screen credential.
Samsung lists swipe, pattern, PIN, password, fingerprint and facial recognition among possible screen-lock methods, while noting that availability varies by device. See Samsung Support UK’s unlock guidance for its description of these issues.
If the tablet is frozen and you know the screen credential
For supported models, Samsung UK suggests a soft reset: hold the Power and Volume Down buttons until the screen turns black and the Samsung logo appears, then try the credential you already know. This restarts the tablet; it does not bypass or clear the screen lock. If the screen remains unresponsive, use the support page or manual for your exact model, or contact Samsung service.
If you forgot the screen PIN, pattern or password
Check an unlock option that was already configured
If you had set up a trusted device or trusted location and that condition is still available, check whether the tablet will unlock under it. Samsung describes Smart Lock as keeping a device unlocked under configured trusted conditions. It cannot be enabled remotely after you are locked out.

Understand the reset and data-loss consequences
Samsung Support UK says: “If you are locked out of your device and have not set up a remote unlock method, you will need to perform a factory reset.” A factory reset is an erase-and-restore route, not a way to retrieve the old PIN or password. Back up data before erasing if you still have a way to do so. Samsung warns that remote erase deletes device data and may also erase an SD card.
Try Samsung’s remote erase route
- On another device, open Samsung’s U.S. screen-lock troubleshooting guide and follow its SmartThings Find instructions.
- Sign in with the Samsung account associated with the locked tablet, select the device and choose Erase data; authenticate the account as prompted.
- After the erase, set up the tablet and restore from an available backup.
Samsung’s U.S. Find guidance lists power, a stable network connection, an associated Samsung account and enabled remote controls as prerequisites for its management functions. If the tablet is off, offline or remote controls were not enabled, this route may not be available.

Consider Google Find My Device
Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guidance also describes using Google Find My Device to factory-reset the tablet. The Google device must be powered on and located for that route to proceed, and you need the Google account associated with it. It also erases data; it does not reveal the forgotten screen credential. Review Samsung’s U.S. lost-device guidance for the account and remote-management details.
Complete setup and account verification
After a reset, Android device protection may require the Google account previously registered on the tablet before setup can finish. Sign in with that account, then restore data from a backup if one is available. If the account belongs to a previous owner, ask that legitimate owner to complete verification or contact Samsung or the carrier with proof of ownership; do not attempt to bypass the protection.

If you mean a carrier or network lock
Contact the mobile network provider or retailer that supplied the network-locked device and ask whether it is eligible for unlocking. Samsung UK says fees depend on the device and contract, so availability and charges vary by carrier and country. A network unlock does not remove a forgotten Android screen PIN, pattern or password.

Galaxy Tab A is a product family, not one hardware or software version. Samsung has separate support listings for models including the Galaxy Tab A (7.0) SM-T285 and Galaxy Tab A7 Wi-Fi SM-T500. Menu names, Find features, biometric options and button behavior can differ by model, region and software version.

Find the model number in Settings if you can access the tablet, or check the packaging or device label. Then use the corresponding regional Samsung support page or manual before following any model-specific instructions. Samsung’s listings illustrate the distinction: Galaxy Tab A (7.0) SM-T285 support and Galaxy Tab A7 Wi-Fi SM-T500 support. Samsung’s reviewed guidance does not establish one physical-button factory-reset sequence for every Tab A, so do not assume a sequence for another model.
