China’s cutthroat chip pricing dealt Telegent Systems its immediate commercial blow, but it was not the whole story. The Sunnyvale semiconductor company’s business depended on analog broadcast TV for mobile phones just as that market was maturing and viewers were turning to internet video on their handsets.
What Telegent made—and why its niche mattered
Telegent was a fabless semiconductor company whose chips let mobile handsets receive free-to-air analog television. It was not a consumer-electronics brand selling phones or televisions. It entered an underdeveloped corner of mobile TV while many rivals focused on emerging digital broadcast standards. By late 2009, trade reporting described Telegent as controlling nearly all of that analog niche.
The position gave Telegent room to sell chips at attractive prices, but it also left the company exposed: its fortunes depended on demand for one kind of broadcast reception, rather than mobile video in general.
How China’s price competition hit the business
The immediate problem was a rapid collapse in chip pricing. EE Times reported in 2011 that Telegent’s average selling price fell from $6 to $0.80 within months as MediaTek, RDA Microelectronics, Newport Media and other competitors entered or expanded in the analog market. The steep decline eroded the margin advantage Telegent had enjoyed as a near-single supplier. These are figures from contemporaneous trade reporting, not current prices.

The same report said an industry source estimated Telegent was selling 25 million chips per month at an average selling price of roughly $6 before the squeeze. That was an estimate, not an audited company disclosure. EE Times also reported that Telegent disclosed revenue of $111.12 million and net income of $39.36 million in its November 2009 IPO application; the company later withdrew its planned IPO.
Telegent’s former CTO Samuel Sheng described the competitive environment plainly: “Consumer chips in China are a hugely competitive market.” CEO Ford Tamer later summed up the company’s position: “In the end, we couldn’t change the market dynamics.”

Why lower prices were not the only problem
The broadcast-TV market was maturing
Price cuts were especially damaging because the market was not expanding fast enough to offset them. The 2011 EE Times account said the total available market for analog mobile-TV units had topped out. It also pointed to transitions to digital broadcasting in Latin America and parts of South Asia, which further limited the opportunity for chips built around analog reception. Its market-share and volume figures describe conditions at that time and should be read as period-specific trade reporting.
Viewers shifted toward internet video
In a later EE Times interview, Tamer said consumers increasingly watched TV on mobile handsets through internet streaming over Wi-Fi or LTE instead of receiving broadcast signals. That changed the role of the phone: mobile video no longer had to depend on a dedicated broadcast-TV chip.

Reed Hundt, a former FCC chairman and Telegent board member, characterized the shift this way: “Mobile devices turned out to be a gateway to the Internet, not to broadcast. Broadcasters could have played a role on mobile. But they missed the window.” His comment describes the wider change in mobile viewing, not just the pressure from chip competitors.
How Telegent exited
Spreadtrum Communications’ 2012 Form 20-F says it acquired 100% of Telegent on August 2, 2011. The filing gives consideration of approximately $5.1 million net of cash acquired, excluding indemnification holdbacks, and says the strategic purpose was to strengthen Spreadtrum’s mobile-broadcast-TV patent portfolio. That is the filing’s accounting measure; it should not be treated as interchangeable with other descriptions of the transaction.

In the later interview, Tamer said $100 million was distributed among Telegent’s shareholders and employees. He declined to disclose the actual deal amount and noted that liabilities, escrow and inventory affect acquisition calculations. His distribution claim is a separate executive account, and the interview does not establish that it uses the same measure as Spreadtrum’s filed net-of-cash figure.

China’s price competition explains the sudden damage to Telegent’s economics: competitors drove its reported chip selling price sharply lower. The deeper vulnerability was that analog mobile TV was a maturing niche while phones were becoming gateways to internet-streamed video. The company’s fall is best understood as the collision of those two forces, not as a China-only story.
