It can serve as a primary router or join an existing eero network. eero advertises coverage up to 1,500 square feet per router, support for 75+ connected devices, and speeds up to 940 Mbps, but those are manufacturer claims—not independent test results. It makes the most sense for buyers who want a straightforward eero-based Wi-Fi 6 setup and do not need 6 GHz Wi-Fi or more than two wired ports on the router.
What the eero 6+ is
The eero 6+ (model R010001) is a dual-band, concurrent 2×2 Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) router. It supports 160 MHz channels on 5 GHz and is backward compatible with older Wi-Fi standards. It can act as the gateway router connected to your internet service, or as an access point in an existing eero network. eero describes it as suitable for internet plans up to 1 Gbps.
Its two auto-sensing 1 Gigabit Ethernet ports can serve WAN and/or LAN roles. That is enough for a modem connection and one wired device, or another combination that fits the network, but households with several wired devices may need a separate Ethernet switch.
How fast is the eero 6+?
eero’s support material states speeds up to 940 Mbps, while its product page uses gigabit-class positioning. These are manufacturer-published claims; the inspected official pages do not provide independent test measurements or a dated real-world throughput result. A device’s actual connection depends on the internet plan, client Wi-Fi hardware, router placement, interference, and network topology. A gigabit plan therefore does not mean every device will receive gigabit speeds over Wi-Fi.
#1 Best Overall
- GIGABIT SPEEDS FOR LESS - Supports wifi speeds up to a gigabit, without the premium price tag. eero 6+ is our most affordable gigabit system ever. Backward-compatible with previous-generation eero devices.
- WI-FI 6 GETS A BANDWIDTH BOOST - eero 6+ supports additional wifi bandwidth on the 160 MHz radio channel (that’s just wifi talk for faster connectivity). With the eero 6+, there’s enough bandwidth for the whole family to work, stream, and video chat—all at the same time.
- CONNECTIVITY YOU CAN COUNT ON - eero 6+ gives you all the connectivity with all the reliability. So you can work from home with confidence—and say goodbye to dropped video calls. Or keep your smart home running, even when you’re away.
- EXPERIENCE THE EERO TRUEMESH DIFFERENCE - eero’s patented TrueMesh technology intelligently routes traffic to reduce drop-offs and dead spots.
- SET UP IN MINUTES - The eero app guides you through setup and allows you to manage your network from anywhere.
The 160 MHz channel support is a feature of the 5 GHz radio, not an additional frequency band. The eero 6+ is dual-band and does not provide 6 GHz Wi-Fi. Buyers comparing it with a Wi-Fi 6E system should account for that difference as well as port count, home layout, app requirements, subscription features, and compatibility with existing mesh equipment. eero’s product information lists 6E models with a 6 GHz band, but the available information does not establish a tested head-to-head performance ranking.
Coverage and connected-device claims
eero states that one eero 6+ router covers up to 1,500 square feet and supports 75+ connected devices. The pages inspected do not show a publication year for these figures, and they are product claims rather than independently measured results. Treat them as a rough starting point, not a guarantee for a particular floor plan, building material, or number of simultaneously active devices.

Placement and layout matter: walls, floors, interference, and distance can affect coverage. If you expand an eero network, the eero 6+ Extender is a wireless-only add-on that eero says can add up to 1,500 square feet of coverage. It has no Ethernet ports and cannot connect directly to a modem or work as a standalone router.
Router versus eero 6+ Extender
| Device | Role | Ethernet | Can connect to a modem as the router? |
|---|---|---|---|
| eero 6+ | Primary router or access point in an eero network | Two auto-sensing 1 Gigabit Ethernet ports | Yes |
| eero 6+ Extender | Wireless extension of an existing eero network | No Ethernet ports | No |
Choose the router if you need a gateway device or a wired connection. Choose the Extender only to extend an existing compatible eero network; it does not replace a router.

- BUILT-IN ZIGBEE SMART HOME HUB - eero 6 connects compatible devices on your network with Alexa—so there’s no need to buy separate smart home hubs for each device.
Setup, internet service, and compatibility
Setup and management require the eero app on a supported Android or iOS device. Internet service is required; a modem is needed for cable, fiber, or DSL service where applicable. eero says the device works with most major internet service providers, but confirm that the router is compatible with the specific provider and service at your address.
Older Wi-Fi devices can connect using the standards they support, but they do not gain Wi-Fi 6 features from the router. eero notes that some older devices may have trouble when WPA3 is enabled. Its Wi-Fi 6 guidance also says that Wi-Fi 6 eeros do not use Wi-Fi 6 backhaul when meshing with Wi-Fi 5 eero models, which may affect speed and latency as devices roam between generations.

- EXTEND YOUR EERO WIFI COVERAGE - An eero 6 extender adds up to 1,500 sq. ft. of Wi-Fi 6 coverage to your existing eero mesh wifi system.
- REQUIRES AN EERO NETWORK - eero 6 extenders require an existing eero network. You can add as many eero 6 extenders as you need to maximize coverage throughout your home.

- GETS BETTER OVER TIME - Automatic updates bring the latest and greatest in eero wifi while also helping to keep your network safe and secure.
Smart-home features and subscriptions
The eero 6+ includes Thread and Zigbee radio support, Matter-controller capability, and Works with Alexa support. Those platform features do not guarantee compatibility with every smart-home product; check the requirements for the specific device and ecosystem you plan to use.
eero offers optional eero Plus subscription services. Subscription features and terms can change, so check the current offer for your region before relying on a particular security or parental-control function. The router’s core setup still requires the eero app.
Who should consider the eero 6+?
- Consider it if you want a Wi-Fi 6 router that can join an existing eero network or serve as its gateway, and two gigabit Ethernet ports are sufficient.
- Consider another option if you specifically need 6 GHz Wi-Fi, more built-in wired ports, or a mesh system outside the eero ecosystem.
- Check your needs first if you depend on older Wi-Fi clients, WPA3, a mixed-generation eero mesh, or particular Matter, Thread, or Zigbee devices.
For comparison, look beyond headline coverage and speed claims: verify the radio bands, Ethernet capacity, expected placement and backhaul, compatibility with your current mesh, app and account requirements, subscription-dependent features, and warranty terms. eero’s support page states a limited one-year warranty; confirm the terms that apply to your location and purchase.
