Windows 11 can show temperature for supported NVMe SSDs in Settings. For SATA SSDs and HDDs, that Settings health display is not available; try PowerShell or a compatible SMART utility instead. Whether either option returns a value depends on what the drive, controller, and storage path expose.
Check a supported NVMe SSD in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Storage.
- Expand Advanced storage settings, then select Disks & volumes.
- Select the disk, open Properties, and review its health information for temperature.
Microsoft says this temperature is the overall device temperature in degrees Celsius. The Settings health display monitors NVM SSDs, not SATA SSDs or HDDs. Microsoft’s storage-device warning guidance explains the limitation.
Query drive temperature in PowerShell
PowerShell can request storage reliability counters from devices that expose them. Open PowerShell and run:
Get-PhysicalDisk | Get-StorageReliabilityCounter | Select-Object DeviceId, Temperature, TemperatureMaxTemperature is reported in degrees Celsius. TemperatureMax is the maximum temperature at which that device is capable of normal operation; it is not a universal recommended operating target. The counters can also include errors, wear, and time in use. Microsoft describes them as dynamic information obtained from the storage device when needed (counter class reference; PowerShell cmdlet reference).

If a temperature field is blank or unavailable, the result does not mean the drive is cool or defective. The device, driver, controller, connection path, or Windows storage stack may not expose the counter.

Use a SMART utility when Windows does not show a reading
CrystalDiskInfo is a separate HDD/SSD monitoring utility whose publisher lists Windows 11 support and describes temperature and health-status displays. Check its current download and compatibility information on the publisher’s site. Its controller notes warn that many RAID controllers are unsupported and that compatibility is not guaranteed in every environment (general information; controller information).

Interpret the temperature carefully
A reading is a value reported by the drive or its storage path, not a complete diagnosis. For NVMe, Microsoft’s documentation describes the composite temperature as the overall device temperature, including the controller and NVM subsystem; NVMe devices also provide their own warning and critical thresholds (NVMe drive guidance; NVMe health-log structure).
There is no single safe temperature cutoff established for every SATA SSD, NVMe SSD, and HDD. Check the exact drive model’s manufacturer specifications and warnings rather than applying one figure to all drives. A temperature alone also does not show all aspects of health: Windows can report separate critical warnings for issues such as low spare capacity, degraded reliability, or read-only state. If Windows displays a critical warning, Microsoft recommends backing up data and seeking support.
