Start by selecting the microphone you actually want to use, then enable your meeting app’s speech-focused noise control and test it with the sounds in your room. If the voice sounds clipped or unnatural, reduce the processing or try a closer microphone. A headset is an optional next step—not a substitute for checking the app settings first.
1. Choose and test the right microphone
A laptop, webcam, monitor, and headset can each appear as a separate audio input. If the wrong one is active, software noise reduction may not solve the main problem: your voice may sound distant, or the microphone may pick up more room sound than necessary.
- Select your intended microphone. Open the meeting app’s audio or device settings and choose the microphone you plan to speak into, rather than assuming the app picked it automatically.
- Run an audio check or test call. Speak at your usual distance and volume, then listen for a clear voice without clipping or excessive room sound. Microsoft Teams documents microphone selection and a test call in its device settings.
- Recheck after changing equipment. Connecting a headset or USB microphone can change the selected input. Confirm the active microphone again before an important meeting.
2. Turn on your meeting app’s noise control
Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet all provide built-in controls intended to reduce distracting background sound. Names and availability can change with app updates, device, and organization settings, so consult the app’s current help page if a control is missing.
| App | Control to look for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Zoom | Noise removal; Personalized audio isolation | Zoom says its normal meeting mode uses noise suppression and echo cancellation. Personalized audio isolation is an optional feature that uses a voiceprint. See Zoom’s meeting audio settings. |
| Microsoft Teams | Noise suppression; Voice isolation | Teams offers these in device settings. Voice isolation requires setting up a voice profile. See Teams device settings and Microsoft’s Voice isolation guide. |
| Google Meet | Noise cancellation | Google says it can reduce sounds such as typing, a door closing, room echo, or construction. The setting can be changed before or during a meeting; organization configuration can affect availability. See Google Meet’s noise cancellation help. |
Enable the relevant control in the app’s audio settings, then make a short test call or ask a participant whether the background is less distracting. The controls are aids, not guarantees that every sound will disappear.

- Omnidirectional Microphone - It is not a Speaker or Speakerphone, it is a condenser microphone. Participants can hear each other without raising their voices.
- Made for Conferences - This microphone is perfect for small or medium meetings over an internet network by using Skype/GoToMeeting/WebEx/Hangouts/Fuze/VoIP/Zoom and other softwares. You can also use it for court reports, seminars, remote training, business negotiations, video chats, etc.
- Plug & Play, No Drivers Required - The microphone is compatible with all operating systems - both Windows and macOS. You just need to plug the microphone to start recording. If there is no response after inserting the mic, please go to the microphone setting of your computer and select the mic as the INPUT device.
- Convenient Mute Button - Quickly mute/unmute your microphone. The built-in blue indicator light for checking whether the USB microphone is working.
- Well Designed Cable - The microphone is constructed of sturdy and metal material and the base is fitted with an anti-slip mat which keeps it stable on desktop during use. It is small, convenient and does not require much space when in use. Connected with a 1.8m nylon shielded wire, it effectively eliminates signal interferences to achieve the best recording results.
3. Tune suppression against real room sounds
Test with what is actually happening around you—such as typing, a fan, nearby conversation, or room echo. Increase processing only while it is helping. The goal is intelligible, natural speech, not silence at any cost.
- If keyboard or fan noise remains distracting and your voice still sounds natural, keep the stronger setting.
- If words or syllables are cut off, or your voice sounds processed, reduce suppression or try another microphone.
- If the meeting needs to carry music or another full-range sound, speech-oriented filters may remove audio you want people to hear.
Zoom’s professional-audio guidance explains that filters can interfere when the microphone needs to capture the full sound range, including in music-related situations. There is no universally best suppression level: choose based on the background noise, the naturalness of your voice, whether you need to transmit non-speech audio, and which controls your app and account support.

4. Consider a headset if the microphone still sounds distant
If the built-in microphone continues to pick up room echo or makes your voice sound far away, a headset or earset with a microphone is an optional hardware change. A microphone positioned closer to your mouth can improve placement, and an institutional 2021 WHO-hosted document titled “Zoom Best Practice” says a headset microphone “should mitigate noise pollution in the room which could cause an echo.” Read the WHO-hosted guidance.
This is not a claim that a headset blocks all room noise or that its headphone noise-cancelling feature removes sounds from the microphone feed. If you use Bluetooth headphones with Zoom, note that Zoom warns other participants may hear lower-quality microphone audio. Its Bluetooth headphone guidance explains that tradeoff.
