To join your first video meeting, open the invitation link, choose the browser or app option it offers, allow camera and microphone access, check your devices on the preview screen, then select Join. You may need to sign in, enter a meeting passcode, or wait for the organizer to admit you, depending on the service and the organizer’s settings.

Before you join: find the invite and check your device

Start with the email or calendar invitation. Its meeting link is usually the simplest route. If there is no link, look for a meeting ID and passcode, then ask the organizer which service to use and how to enter them.

Use a device with an internet connection and working audio. Built-in camera, microphone, and speakers are often enough; you do not automatically need to buy accessories. Google Meet calls for broadband and a built-in webcam or external USB camera, while Microsoft lists a compatible microphone and speakers or headset and a USB video camera among its Teams client requirements. See Google Meet’s requirements and Microsoft’s Teams system requirements.

Join the meeting step by step

  1. Open the invitation link. Use the link in the organizer’s email or calendar event. If prompted, enter the meeting ID or passcode provided by the organizer.
  2. Choose a browser or app. Follow the options on the page. Some meetings allow browser access; others require an app or a particular sign-in. If no browser option appears, use the offered app path or ask the organizer.
  3. Allow camera and microphone access. When the browser or service asks to use them, choose Allow. If access was blocked earlier, update the relevant browser site permission or device privacy setting, then reload or leave and re-enter.
  4. Check the preview before entering. Select the intended camera and microphone if options are shown. Enter a display name or sign in if requested, and choose whether your camera should be on when you arrive.
  5. Select Join or Join now. If a lobby or waiting room appears, stay there until the organizer admits you. Follow any sign-in, verification, or passcode prompt shown.

Do you need an app or an account?

Not always. Whether you can join in a browser or as a guest depends on the meeting service, browser, and organizer or organization settings. Use the invitation’s available route rather than assuming every meeting permits app-free or account-free access.

Service Browser or app Account and access notes
Google Meet Meet supports current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari; mobile users can use the Meet or Gmail app. Check Google’s current requirements. Workspace administrators may need to enable Meet. Creating a work or school meeting requires signing in to the Workspace account.
Microsoft Teams Many invitees can select “Continue on this browser” or use the app. Microsoft says an account is not required for many meetings, but organizer or administrator settings can require an authorized account or email verification. A lobby may also require admission. See Microsoft’s guest-joining guidance.
Zoom Browser joining depends on the host enabling it and has limited functionality; Zoom recommends its desktop app when possible for its best audio/video experience. Participants generally do not need a Zoom account, but host authentication settings can require one. See Zoom’s no-account joining guidance and Zoom Web App guidance.

Teams Free has a separate guest-joining explanation: Microsoft says, “You don’t need an account to attend a meeting but signing up lets you review the meeting chat history, share GIFs, and more.” This does not override a sign-in requirement imposed by another Teams meeting’s policy. See Microsoft Support’s Teams Free guidance.

Turn on or troubleshoot your camera and microphone

If the camera or microphone is blocked

Check the browser’s permissions for the meeting site and the device’s privacy settings. Allow camera and microphone access, reload the meeting page, and re-enter. On Zoom’s web route, microphone permission is needed for others to hear you.

The organizer may have disabled browser access, or that meeting may require an app. Follow the invitation’s available option or ask the organizer whether a browser route is permitted.
