To make a song with an AI music generator, start with one clear idea, describe its sound and mood in a concise prompt, then generate a draft and revise it by listening. You can provide your own lyrics when the service supports them. Before sharing or selling the finished track, check the service’s current plan terms, export rules, and the rules of the platform where you intend to publish.

Make a first draft in six steps

  1. Choose the song’s purpose. Decide who you are making it for and what you want the listener to feel or remember. Focus on one subject or story rather than combining unrelated ideas.
  2. Describe the musical direction. Choose a genre or blend of styles, a mood and energy level, and a few defining instruments or vocal qualities. A short prompt makes it easier to tell which changes affect the result. Udio’s beginner guide recommends describing a song’s style, mood, or theme.
  3. Decide who will write the lyrics. You can ask the generator for lyrics or supply your own if the service offers that option. Suno’s Custom mode, for example, includes a field for user-written lyrics and additional context; see its guide to using your own lyrics. Only submit words you wrote or have permission to use.
  4. Generate a draft. Enter the prompt and choose a duration or other options if the current interface provides them. Controls vary by service and can change. Udio’s guide, dated March 14, 2025, describes a 32-second default clip and a longer-song option for the interface it documents; do not assume those settings are current or apply elsewhere.
  5. Listen for specific improvements. Check whether the result fits the intended mood, whether the lyrics are intelligible, and whether the arrangement feels complete. Revise one or two prompt details at a time so you can judge their effect. If the service offers continuation or extension, it may help develop an intro, outro, or missing section; Udio’s guide documents an extension workflow.
  6. Keep a project record. Save your prompt, original lyrics, generation date, and relevant plan and download details. This helps you track how the song was made and which terms applied, but does not itself establish ownership or legal protection.

Write a prompt the generator can interpret

A useful starting point is to name the style, subject, mood, energy, instruments, vocal direction, and one structural idea. Adapt the wording to the fields your service provides:

A [genre or style] song about [subject or story], with a [mood] feel, [tempo or energy], [key instruments], and [vocal description]. Build toward [chorus or climax] and end with [ending idea].

For example: “A warm indie-pop song about a late-night train ride, with intimate vocals, gentle guitar, a brighter chorus, and a quiet ending.” Treat that as a description of what you want, not a guarantee of what the generator will produce. Listen to the draft and adjust the parts that matter most.

Choose between generated lyrics and your own

Generated lyrics are a quick way to explore an idea. Writing your own gives you more control over the story and adds a human-written contribution to the finished work. Suno’s Custom mode supports user lyrics, and Suno says users retain ownership and rights to original lyrics they input. That does not automatically settle the legal status of the generated music or the complete song. For guidance on rights and distribution, see Suno’s distribution guidance.

Do not paste lyrics written by someone else unless you have permission. More broadly, only submit material you have rights to use; Suno’s Terms of Service place that responsibility on users.

Understand what prompting can and cannot control

A prompt communicates creative direction, but it does not mean you personally authored every musical element the generator produces. Original lyrics, a melody you wrote, or material you substantially edit and arrange may be relevant to authorship, but the legal effect depends on the jurisdiction and the human contribution. Suno’s copyright guidance says prompting alone does not constitute creation of a song for U.S. copyright purposes. It also distinguishes its grants of ownership or commercial-use rights from copyright protection.

Check rights and export rules before publishing

Permission from a service to use a track commercially is not the same as copyright protection, exclusivity, or a guarantee that a distributor or social platform will accept it. Verify the terms for the exact service, plan, track, and generation or download date, then check the destination platform’s rules.

Suno: plan and timing matter

Suno’s paid-subscription rights page, edited September 3, 2026, says tracks downloaded while subscribed receive commercial-use rights and may be used for distribution or in film, television, and video games. Its distribution guidance, edited December 17, 2025, says songs made on the free plan are limited to noncommercial use and that a later paid subscription does not retroactively license an earlier song. The service’s terms add conditions, including that free/basic output is for personal, noncommercial use and that permitted commercial use is conditioned on a qualifying approved download. Read the terms in force when you create and download the track.

Commercial-use permission does not guarantee that a track qualifies for copyright protection. Suno says fully AI-generated music may not qualify for U.S. copyright protection, while human-written lyrics may be registrable separately; treatment can vary by region or registrar. For a consequential release, consult the relevant copyright office or a qualified music-rights professional in your jurisdiction.

Udio: verify current service status and export availability

Udio’s beginner guide is dated March 14, 2025, so its interface and export instructions may no longer apply. The Associated Press reported on October 30, 2025, that Udio and Universal Music Group announced a settlement and licensing agreements and that Udio stopped downloads amid a service transition. That report does not establish Udio’s current status. Check Udio’s current official help and terms before relying on older instructions or making release plans.
