Light and sound signaling systems communicate a machine’s or process’s status, a fault, or a warning through visual indicators, audible devices, or both. In industry, configurable stack lights and signal towers help operators recognize equipment states; building fire alarms are regulated life-safety systems with separate design and installation requirements.

What a light and sound signaling system does

A signaling system turns a condition into a cue people can perceive. A visual cue may be a steady light, a flash, or a changing color; an audible cue may be a tone, horn, alarm, or recorded message. A combined device provides both channels. Industrial signaling is used for machine status, faults, safety events, process monitoring, and startup; some products are also used for area or building evacuation alerts. Rockwell Automation describes visual, audible, and combined signaling devices, while Pfannenberg lists a range of industrial signaling applications.

The term also overlaps with building emergency notification. That overlap does not make the systems interchangeable: a factory stack light is an equipment indicator, not a substitute for a code-compliant fire alarm system.

Common types of signaling devices

Visual devices

Visual signaling includes stack lights or signal towers, beacons, strobes, and panel lights. A tower can use multiple colored modules to show different operating states at a glance. A beacon or strobe is useful when a signal needs to draw attention, while a panel light can indicate a local condition at a control point. Visibility depends on placement, viewing angle, ambient light, and whether affected people can see the device.

  • Ultra-loud sound, alarm volume greater than or equal to 105dB.
  • Built-in 6 LEDs, super bright when the alarm signal is issued, effectively remind people away from fire.
  • A kind of alarm terminal equipment, suitable for sound and light alarm in case of fire.

Audible devices

Horns, alarms, sounders, and loudspeakers communicate through sound. Their signal may be a tone, pattern, or spoken message. Ambient noise, distance, room layout, and the needs of the people expected to respond affect whether an audible signal will be noticed and understood.

Combined audible and visual units

Some devices pair a light with an acoustic module. Eaton’s SL modular tower families, for example, offer configurable light and sound components for signaling the operating state of a machine, system, or process. Eaton’s SL7 product information describes one such tower family. A combined unit can communicate through two channels, but it still needs a clear signal plan and suitable placement.

How to choose an industrial signal tower or alarm

Start with the condition that needs to be communicated and the people who need to act on it. Compare exact product variants: specifications and available interfaces differ even within a product family.

  1. Define the purpose and response. Decide whether the device indicates normal operation, a warning, a fault, startup, or an emergency. State what the operator should do when each signal appears.
  2. Choose the signaling channel. Select visual-only, audible-only, or combined signaling based on where the signal must be perceived and the conditions in that location.
  3. Specify the visual states and sound. Decide how many distinct states are needed, which colors or flash modes represent them, and whether the sound should be a tone, pattern, horn, or message. Check what the particular model supports.
  4. Check electrical and control compatibility. Confirm the exact variant’s voltage and how it connects to the control system, such as PLC/I/O or an IO-Link interface where offered. Do not assume all modules in a family use the same interface.
  5. Assess placement and environment. Check viewing angles, mounting location, ambient light and noise, and the exact model’s enclosure and environmental ratings. Verify the datasheet for the variant being installed.
  6. Plan mounting and maintenance. Confirm that the chosen mount fits the installation and that light, sound, wiring, and modules can be inspected and serviced as needed.
  7. Document the signal convention. Label or train operators on what each color, flash, tone, or message means, including the expected response.

Manufacturer product pages illustrate why model-level verification matters: ifm describes configurable stack-light options, and Phoenix Contact lists industrial signal tower products and options. Their available modes and specifications are not a universal standard.

  • Easy to Install: The extended screws at the bottom make installation convenient; Simply place the unit in the fixed position and tighten the bolts; Additionally, the exposed wires allow for easy DIY wiring according to your needs, making it suitable for a variety of applications

Why signal meanings should be defined for the application

There is no single color, flash, or tone code established across all industrial signaling applications by the cited manufacturers. A color that means one thing on one machine may have a different meaning in another facility. Select a convention that suits the process, make it consistent across the relevant equipment, and explain it to the people who rely on it. Do not expect workers, contractors, or visitors to infer a response from color alone.

Workplace alarms and accessibility

U.S. workplace alarm obligations are distinct from the rules governing a specific fire-alarm installation. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.165(b)(1), an employee alarm must be capable of being perceived above ambient noise or light levels by all employees in affected portions of the workplace. OSHA also recognizes tactile devices for people who might not otherwise recognize an audible or visual alarm.

For building fire-alarm systems, the 2010 ADA Standards, section 215, addresses fire-alarm systems where audible fire-alarm coverage is provided. The standards address visible alarms within the spaces they serve and include an exception related to existing facilities. Applicability and technical requirements depend on current federal standards, locally adopted building and fire codes, and the relevant NFPA edition. The ADA’s 1991 standards contain older technical language; their figures should not be treated as a current universal design rule without checking the jurisdiction and project.

A generic consumer beacon or industrial stack light should not be used as a fire-alarm substitute. Building emergency notification should be designed and installed by qualified fire-alarm professionals to the rules adopted for the project, with the authority having jurisdiction consulted where requirements are unclear.
