Start by lowering the call’s video quality; if it still freezes or breaks up, turn off your camera and keep audio. Then check both upload and download, test a more reliable connection such as Ethernet, and look for Wi-Fi, device, VPN, or other-participant problems. A single speed test cannot identify every cause.
Make the call usable first: reduce video demand
Video calling sends your camera feed upstream and receives other people’s feeds downstream. Reducing either direction’s video demand can help when the connection is slow or fluctuating. Video settings differ by app, account, and device, so use the controls available in your current client.
Google Meet
On a computer, open Settings > Video and lower the send and receive resolution if those controls are available. Google lists 360p as using less data than 720p. Receive resolution also includes Audio Only, which uses the least data; at 360p single-feed receive mode, other participants’ thumbnails are turned off. 1080p uses the most data, requires compatible hardware, and sending it is limited to listed Google Workspace and Google One editions. Options and eligibility may vary by account; see Google Meet video quality settings. [c004]
Zoom
Disable HD video when network or computer performance is poor. Zoom says its HD setting uses approximately 2 Mbps more in both directions; that is the support page’s approximate setting impact, not a universal codec requirement. If the connection is congested and clear speech matters more than seeing participants, turn off your video feed. See Zoom’s HD video guidance and low-bandwidth recommendations. [c006] [c008]

Microsoft Teams
Teams adapts call quality to network conditions and prioritizes audio over video when bandwidth is insufficient. Do not assume every client or managed account has a control to force a particular resolution. Microsoft’s current bandwidth guidance explains that actual consumption varies with layout, resolution, and frame rate. [c007]
Free resources the call may be competing for
Close downloads, streaming video, unnecessary apps, and extra browser tabs where practical. Google lists excess tabs and open applications among potential contributors to poor Meet quality. Lowering video settings can still help even when a platform adapts automatically. [c001] [c004]

Check both upload and download
Run a speed test while the call is struggling, and note both upload and download results. Upload matters for your camera and microphone stream; download matters for receiving the other participants. Compare the results with the service you pay for, but remember that advertised ISP speed is not the same as bandwidth consistently available to a call. Other household activity and Wi-Fi conditions can reduce what the meeting gets. Repeat the test or observe the connection at different times if performance fluctuates. Google emphasizes stable bandwidth and low latency, and Microsoft notes that the other participant’s connection may also be the source of trouble. [c001] [c002]
Published requirements are app- and call-specific recommendations, not guarantees. The figures below are from Zoom’s current support guidance accessed in 2026 and Microsoft Learn documentation accessed in 2026. For each row, upload is listed first and download second.

Zoom’s figures are from its bandwidth requirements; Teams’ figures are from Microsoft’s network preparation guidance. Teams says minimum video bandwidth supports reduced quality. Because the apps describe different call configurations, do not treat these figures as a universal threshold or compare them as if they were measured under identical conditions. [c005] [c007]
Improve the connection between your device and the internet
Try Ethernet before buying Wi-Fi equipment
If your computer and router have compatible Ethernet ports, connect them with a cable and compare call quality. A wired test can distinguish a weak or congested Wi-Fi link from a broader internet-service problem; Google specifically recommends trying Ethernet. If the device lacks an Ethernet port, an adapter may be needed, but check compatibility with that device before buying one. [c001] [c003]

- WiFi 6E Tri-Band Mesh WiFi – Cover up to 7,200 Sq.Ft with next-gen seamless WiFi and make dead zones and buffering a thing of the past¹ ²
- Brand-New 6 GHz Band – Experience the latest frequency of WiFi, eliminating interference from all legacy devices. The 6 GHz band can work as a backhaul to ensure stable connections between nodes by default. You can switch it to Wi-Fi Network mode and connect your WiFi 6E-compatible devices to 6GHz Network³
- True Tri-Band Speed – All three WiFi bands work together to unleash your network’s total speeds up to 5,400 Mbps for 200 devices(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);5 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)¹ ³

- Unlock the Full Potential of WiFi 6 - Opening the 6 GHz band will change the game for WiFi 6. WiFi 6 brings about upgraded performance in network efficiency and capacity. Whereas the advantages of WiFi 6 are not fully realized while competing with transmissions from WiFi 5 (or other radios). The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential
Choose Wi-Fi band by location, not by rule of thumb
When Ethernet is not practical, try the other Wi-Fi band if your router and device support it. The better choice depends on distance, walls, interference, and congestion.
| Wi-Fi band | Often useful when | Trade-off |
| 2.4 GHz | Your device is farther from the router or separated by walls and other obstacles | Generally reaches farther and passes obstacles better, but is slower and often more congested |
| 5 GHz | Your device is relatively close to the router and a faster, less congested connection is available | Can offer faster throughput and more non-overlapping channels, but has shorter range and penetrates walls less well |
Move closer to the router, put it in a central location, and reduce the number of walls or ceilings between it and your device. Nearby sources of interference may also matter. Microsoft identifies repeaters as one possible way to improve signal strength; an extender is most relevant when coverage is weak, not when the ISP connection itself is slow. [c002]

Update equipment only when the symptoms point to it
Router or network-adapter firmware and drivers can affect connectivity; check for updates from the manufacturer. Microsoft also lists newer router or adapter equipment as a possible upgrade if other measures fail. First compare wired and Wi-Fi performance and try better placement: buying a router, adapter, or extender without evidence of a local equipment or coverage issue may not solve the bottleneck. [c002]
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate network trouble from device or route trouble
- Device load: If video improves after closing unused apps and tabs or lowering resolution, the computer may be short on processing capacity as well as bandwidth. Zoom notes that HD can tax CPU performance, too. [c004] [c006]
- VPN or managed security: A VPN may route a call through an additional network location; firewalls or inspection devices can also impair Meet. Test without a VPN only if your organization’s policy permits it. On a managed work connection, ask IT to investigate VPN routing, firewall inspection, split tunneling, or quality-of-service settings rather than changing them yourself. [c001] [c007]
- The other participant: If only one person’s video or audio is poor, or the problem changes when that person leaves, their connection or device may be the cause. Microsoft notes that both participants need adequate bandwidth. [c002]
- Latency and instability: A high download result does not rule out delay, jitter, packet loss, or intermittent Wi-Fi. Google emphasizes low latency as well as stable bandwidth; repeat observations during the problem can be more informative than one test. [c001]
Fall back to audio if video remains unreliable
If lower-resolution video still freezes or disrupts conversation, turn off the camera and keep audio. If available in the platform, join by phone or use a phone for meeting audio. Google Meet recommends these alternatives for poor network conditions, and Zoom’s low-bandwidth guidance describes prioritizing audio and screen sharing over video. [c001] [c008]
Make one change at a time where possible—first video settings, then the network path, then device or managed-network checks—and compare the result in the same call or a similar situation. That makes it easier to tell which fix actually helped.
