A LackRack is a DIY equipment frame made by adapting IKEA LACK furniture—not an IKEA server-rack product. Community guides show how builders stack tables and attach rack rails to their legs to hold 19-inch rackmount equipment. The idea can make a small home lab look organized, but the guides do not establish a safe load capacity, certified stability, or measured cooling performance.
What is an IKEA LackRack?
“LackRack” and “LACK server rack” refer to a furniture hack: a LACK table provides a frame, while rack rails mounted to its legs support rackmount hardware. The current LackRack 20XX community guide describes the side-table legs as spaced almost perfectly for rackmount equipment. That is the guide author’s fit description, not an IKEA compatibility guarantee. Read the LackRack 20XX community build guide.
The project builds on an older community design documented in the archived eth0Wiki LackRack manual. That manual names a LACK side table, screwdriver, and wood screws as materials for its original construction, and discusses 19-inch hardware. Its linked product details and prices are historical, not current shopping guidance.
What to measure before buying or drilling
Do not assume that every current LACK table, rail set, or piece of rackmount equipment will fit the measurements shown in a community guide. Product revisions and regional availability can vary, and the cited guides do not validate every LACK model. Measure the actual furniture and equipment you plan to use before purchasing hardware or making holes.

- Table: Measure the spacing between the legs where the rails will attach, as well as the usable height and depth of the assembly.
- Rails: Check their mounting-hole positions and overall length against the legs and the equipment you intend to install.
- Equipment: Confirm that each device’s width, depth, mounting pattern, and cable connections work with the rails and available space.
- Placement: Consider where the assembly will sit and whether it could be bumped, pulled, or climbed on. The community instructions are not a stability or anchoring assessment.
How community guides modify the furniture
The LackRack 20XX guide documents a build concept rather than certified construction instructions: stack tables, attach rack rails to selected legs, and add screws and braces to improve stability. Its author notes that the legs are hollow except near the table base, a detail relevant to drilling and screw placement. Follow the guide for its documented method, but do not treat its directions as an engineered specification or proof that a particular assembly is safe for a particular load.
- Choose the LACK furniture and rack rails only after measuring the parts and equipment you intend to fit.
- Use the community guide’s proposed stacked-table arrangement as a reference for the frame layout, rather than assuming that other LACK models share the same dimensions.
- Mark and attach the rails to the selected legs using the guide’s method, taking account of its warning that the legs are hollow in most of their length.
- Add the screws and braces shown in the guide, then assess the completed assembly conservatively before placing equipment in it. The guide does not provide a tested capacity or certify the result.
Load capacity, stability, and anchoring
There is no manufacturer-approved load rating or controlled durability assessment for a modified LackRack in the cited sources. In particular, IKEA specifications for other LACK products cannot be applied to a side-table rack or to a modified assembly.

| IKEA U.S. LACK TV unit, 47¼ inches | 47¼ × 13¾ × 14⅛ inches | 33 lb maximum shelf load; 35 lb maximum TV weight | The listed TV unit, not a side-table LackRack or modified assembly. IKEA U.S. product page, accessed 2026. |
| IKEA U.S. LACK TV unit, 63 inches | 63 × 13¾ × 14⅛ inches | 55 lb maximum shelf load; 55 lb maximum TV weight | The listed TV unit, not a side-table LackRack or modified assembly. IKEA U.S. product page, accessed 2026. |
On both cited U.S. TV-unit pages, IKEA states: “WARNING! Tipping hazard – this product must be securely anchored. Use suitable screws and plugs for your home. If you are uncertain, seek professional advice.” That warning applies to those specific TV-unit listings; it is not an engineering assessment of a LackRack.
If your equipment is heavy, deep, or expensive, consider a purpose-built rack with an explicit load rating and specifications that match your setup. A LackRack’s suitability cannot be established from the furniture’s appearance or a TV-unit specification.

- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
Airflow, noise, and cost
The cited guides provide no measured temperature comparison, noise test, or controlled comparison of a LackRack with a commercial rack. The open furniture-frame concept may leave equipment exposed, but that alone does not establish that a device will run cooler. Follow each equipment manufacturer’s ventilation-clearance guidance; if temperature matters, measure your own setup under its normal operating conditions.
Similarly, the available sources do not establish that a LackRack is universally cheaper or quieter than a purpose-built rack. The older manual’s prices are historical, and no current, like-for-like cost comparison is available. Compare the current furniture, rails, fasteners, and any bracing you need with the rack alternatives available in your region.

When a LackRack makes sense—and when it does not
- Consider the DIY route if you want an open home-lab project, can verify the fit of your actual parts, and are prepared to make your own conservative decisions about the finished assembly.
- Prefer a purpose-built rack when you need an explicit load rating, validated equipment depth and mounting compatibility, or specifications to support a safety-critical installation.
- Do not infer performance from the DIY design: the cited material does not establish load capacity, long-term durability, measured cooling benefits, or universal compatibility across LACK variants.
