Instead of relying on one system-wide security patch date, an app can compare installed levels with published baselines and, where an on-device update provider reports them, check for updates waiting to install.
What the AndroidX Security State libraries do
Google announced stable releases of AndroidX Security State and its companion provider library on September 17, 2026. The AndroidX release notes date Security State 1.1.0 and Security State Provider 1.0.0 to September 9, 2026. The client library reads device patch state and compares it with published Android Security Bulletin and OSV data; it can also query trusted on-device update providers. The provider library gives OEMs and OTA update clients a standardized way to report available patch information. Google’s announcement describes the purpose, while AndroidX release notes list versions and release details.
Security State 1.1.0 supports unified queries across the system, Mainline modules, and kernel, including discovery of pending updates through registered providers. Provider 1.0.0 introduces an UpdateInfoService framework and standardized ASPL reporting, with Kotlin coroutine and Java ListenableFuture support and configurable caching, rate limiting, and error handling.
What component-level security verification measures
The library tracks three software components that can receive updates on different schedules: the standard Android system, modular system components delivered through Google Play system updates (Project Mainline), and the kernel. It gives apps three related patch-level views:

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
| Level | What it represents | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Device SPL (DSPL) | The patch level installed and running on the device. System and Mainline readings are date-based; the kernel reading is version-based. | Use it to assess the device’s current local state. |
| Published SPL (PSPL) | The officially published baseline drawn from Android Security Bulletins and OSV data. | Compare the installed component state with the relevant published baseline. |
| Available SPL (ASPL) | Patch information reported as available by on-device update clients. | Use it to identify a possible pending update and guide the user toward remediation. |
These are not interchangeable dates. In particular, kernel posture is assessed using its LTS version rather than a monthly calendar patch date. Available-update information is asynchronous and depends on an update provider exposing data for the device.
How an app can use the information
- Choose the component and baseline relevant to the operation. Read the installed component levels and compare them with an organization-defined or vulnerability-specific requirement before a sensitive workflow.
- Check whether remediation is available. Query update availability and, when policy permits, direct the user to system settings to install an update rather than immediately denying access.
- Use CVE-specific checks when needed. Load an OSV vulnerability report, then check whether the specified CVEs are patched before invoking a high-risk subsystem.
- Match the response to the risk. Google lists high-value payments, credential enrollment, corporate resources, biometric access, NFC, and Bluetooth as examples of contexts where patch posture may inform a decision.
For integration, Android’s documented dependency is androidx.security:security-state:1.1.0, added from Google’s Maven repository. Reading local patch state requires no declared permission. Fetching OSV vulnerability data requires android.permission.INTERNET; communication with trusted update providers uses on-device IPC. See the official implementation guide for API details.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Handle update-provider results carefully
fetchAvailableSecurityPatchLevel() may fall back to the device’s current level if a provider times out or reports no pending update. That result alone may not distinguish a genuinely current device from a stale or unavailable provider response. For compliance-sensitive decisions, such as banking or enterprise device-policy enforcement, Android advises inspecting queryAllAvailableUpdates() results and provider freshness timestamps, including lastCheckTimeMillis.
Availability is only as complete as the providers that publish it. Google says Play system-update availability is exposed across GMS Android devices, and system OTA availability is available for devices using Google’s OTA client (GOTA). OEM update-client onboarding is ongoing; therefore, an app should not assume that every manufacturer’s OTA service reports pending updates.

Android version and API-level coverage
| Platform | Documented coverage |
|---|---|
| Android 11 (API 30) and newer | Full component support, including bulletin-published kernel LTS targets and ASPL queries. |
| Android 10 (API 29) | System and module levels are available. Bulletin-published kernel targets are not; the device’s kernel version can still be read locally. |
| Android 9 (API 28) and older | Mainline modules did not yet exist. A module-level query safely falls back to 1970-01-01. |
These distinctions matter when one app supports multiple Android versions: a missing published kernel target or the old-platform module fallback should not be mistaken for a normal current patch level.
OSV and kernel-check limitations
CVE checks, published patch levels, and full-update checks require an OSV report to be loaded into memory first. Calling those methods without a report raises IllegalStateException. The documented CVE helper does not evaluate kernel CVEs; kernel status is assessed against published Android Common Kernel LTS target versions instead.

Patch compliance is not device integrity
Security State evaluates software patch compliance and update availability. It does not establish hardware-backed device authenticity, detect device tampering, or verify app licensing. Android’s official “Understand device security state” guide says to use the Play Integrity API alongside this library for those questions. A patch-compliant reading and a trustworthy-device verdict answer different security questions.
