Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsApple’s current MacBook Air lineup offers two sizes, both powered by the M5 chip: a 13-inch model and a 15-inch model. Choose between them based chiefly on how much screen space you want versus how often you carry your laptop. Then choose unified memory and SSD storage to match the apps and files you actually use—not because a larger configuration is automatically necessary.
13-inch or 15-inch: which MacBook Air size fits your work?
The 13-inch Air has a 13.6-inch display and weighs 2.7 pounds; the 15-inch has a 15.3-inch display and weighs 3.3 pounds, according to Apple’s 2026 technical specifications. The larger model gives you more built-in screen area, while the smaller one takes up less space and weighs less in a bag.
| Model | Display | Weight | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13-inch MacBook Air M5 | 13.6 inches | 2.7 pounds | Frequent travel, smaller desks, and buyers who prioritize lower carry weight. |
| 15-inch MacBook Air M5 | 15.3 inches | 3.3 pounds | People who often keep multiple windows visible or want a larger laptop display. |
Think about your typical workday rather than occasional use. If you often edit documents beside a browser, compare spreadsheets, or keep reference material visible, the 15-inch screen may reduce the need to rearrange windows. If you mostly work in one app at a time or carry your laptop throughout the day, the 13-inch model’s lower weight may matter more. Apple’s comparison page poses the useful question, “Which laptop is right for you?”; the practical answer depends on how you use and transport it (Apple Mac comparison).
Which chip should you choose?
For the current models covered here, the choice is not between different Air chip generations: both sizes use Apple’s M5 chip. Apple lists a 10-core CPU for each. The graphics configuration is not identical across every option: the 13-inch can be configured with an 8-core or 10-core GPU, while Apple lists a 10-core GPU for the 15-inch (13-inch specifications; 15-inch specifications).

This distinction is most relevant if you are considering the lowest 13-inch configuration and your work relies heavily on graphics processing. The available specifications establish the core counts, but do not by themselves show how a particular app or project will perform. For ordinary browsing, office work, video calls, and similar everyday tasks, choose the size and configuration that suit your needs rather than assuming that a higher GPU core count is necessary.
How much unified memory do you need?
Apple lists 16GB, 24GB, and 32GB unified-memory configurations for the current Air lineup. Unified memory is the pool the system uses while apps and processes are running; it is different from SSD storage, where apps and files are kept. Apple’s configuration options show what you can buy, not that every user needs an upgrade (13-inch specifications; 15-inch specifications).

- Consider 16GB if your usual workload is web browsing, email, documents, streaming, video calls, and a modest number of apps open at once.
- Consider 24GB if you regularly keep many apps or browser tabs open, work with larger projects, or want additional capacity for a more demanding mix of tasks.
- Consider 32GB if your routine includes memory-intensive creative or technical work, particularly when several demanding apps or large projects are active together.
These are workload-based decision points, not guarantees about performance or minimum requirements. Consider the apps you use simultaneously, the size of the projects you handle, and how long you plan to keep the laptop. If your work changes substantially over time, a higher capacity may provide more headroom, but the right choice still depends on your actual workload.
How much SSD storage should you buy?
Apple’s listed configurations range from 512GB to 4TB. The 13-inch and 15-inch technical-specification pages list 512GB as a starting capacity and configurations up to 4TB; options can vary by model and Apple’s purchase listings can change (13-inch specifications; 15-inch specifications).

Estimate the local space you will need for apps, active work, photos, videos, downloads, and files you want available offline. A lower-capacity drive may suit someone who keeps most files elsewhere and has a small active project library. If you keep a large photo or video collection, work with bulky project files, or prefer not to manage space frequently, more internal storage can be convenient. Do not assume that a listed capacity will be entirely free for personal files: the operating system, apps, and your working data also use space.
An external USB-C SSD can hold additional files or backups, but it is a separate drive, not an extension of unified memory. Apple lists two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports and MagSafe 3 charging; its support guidance explains that an adapter may be needed when a connected device uses a different connector (Apple Support: connect accessories and displays to your Mac). External storage is useful when you are comfortable carrying or connecting another device and keeping important files organized across drives. It does not provide the same convenience as having enough internal space for files you want with you at all times.

Battery life and ports to factor into the choice
Apple rates the current MacBook Air for up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web use. These are manufacturer-stated maximums, not guaranteed runtimes; Apple notes that actual battery life varies with use and configuration (Apple technical specifications).
Both sizes list two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports and MagSafe 3 charging. If you often connect several wired peripherals at a desk, a compatible hub or dock may be useful; if a device’s connector does not match, you may need an adapter. For a laptop that mostly travels with you, count the ports and any accessories you regularly need before deciding whether the setup will be convenient.

Configuration recommendations by use
| Your priorities | Configuration to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Light everyday use and frequent travel | 13-inch M5, 16GB memory, 512GB SSD | Lower carry weight and the listed entry capacities may be a sensible fit if your app use and local file library are modest. |
| Everyday work with a larger built-in display | 15-inch M5, memory and storage matched to your workload | The 15.3-inch display provides more screen area; decide on upgrades based on apps and files, not screen size alone. |
| Many apps, large projects, or demanding creative work | Either size; consider 24GB or 32GB memory and more SSD capacity if your active projects need it | Choose memory for simultaneous workload demands and storage for local files. The larger screen is a separate preference. |
| Large archive or backup needs | Either size with an SSD capacity suited to the files you want local; consider external storage for additional files or backups | External storage can supplement file space, but does not replace unified memory or the convenience of internal storage. |
These combinations are starting points for comparing configurations, not universal prescriptions. Review Apple’s current purchase options for the exact model you intend to order because configuration availability can change.
