Android’s adapter specification allows digital-to-analog adapters and does not support analog-only adapters, so a low-cost passive adapter is not a safe assumption.
Why a USB-C headphone adapter needs a DAC
A phone sends digital audio through USB-C, while a standard 3.5 mm headphone plug uses analog audio. The adapter must convert the signal between those formats. The Android Open Source Project specification is explicit: “Only digital-to-analog adapters are allowed.” It also says analog-only adapters are unsupported. For shopping, look for a listing or product specification that expressly says the adapter has a built-in DAC (digital-to-analog converter). Do not infer that it has one from its USB-C plug or from a 3.5 mm socket alone.
Check compatibility with your exact Android phone
Compatibility depends on both the handset and the adapter. Before buying, check the phone maker’s guidance for your exact model and the adapter maker’s stated compatibility. For example, Samsung says that when a device does not directly support DAC, a USB Type-C to 3.5 mm adapter with a built-in DAC is required. That is Samsung guidance; do not treat it as a universal statement about every Android handset. Samsung’s adapter guidance.
Match the adapter to your headphones or headset
Android’s minimum adapter specification includes stereo analog devices both with and without microphones. That does not establish that every individual adapter passes through every headset function. Confirm the features you rely on in the adapter’s specifications:

Pixel-specific compatibility guidance
Google says Pixel phones work with USB-C audio accessories or Bluetooth. Google also describes Made by Google and Made for Google labels as indicating certification for Pixel compatibility. Before you buy
- Find the compatibility guidance for your exact phone model from its manufacturer.
- Select a USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter whose specifications explicitly identify a built-in DAC.
- Check the adapter maker’s compatibility statement for your phone.
- Confirm stereo playback, headset microphone support, and any inline controls you need.
- Check the connector and cable arrangement against your setup, such as whether the adapter’s length and plug placement are practical for how you use the phone.
The right category is a USB-C to 3.5 mm headphone adapter with a built-in DAC. Without the phone model and a specific adapter, compatibility cannot be determined in advance; use the manufacturer’s guidance and the adapter’s stated features to make the final check.
