UV printing uses an inkjet printer to place liquid ink on a surface, then ultraviolet (UV) energy cures that ink into a solid film. It is used on materials ranging from plastics and glass to metal, coated paper, film, and wood—but a printer’s ability to put ink on a material does not guarantee durable adhesion. The specific substrate, ink, printer, surface preparation, and intended use all matter.
How UV printing works
In digital UV inkjet printing, printheads deposit tiny droplets of specially formulated liquid ink onto the material. The printed surface then passes under a UV source. Photoinitiators in the ink absorb the UV energy and generate reactive species that start polymerisation among the ink’s monomers and oligomers. The liquid becomes a crosslinked solid film. This is curing, not conventional drying through evaporation or absorption. FUJIFILM’s guide to UV inkjet printing describes the process and ink chemistry.
UV ink is a formulation, not one universal material. Oligomers help determine the cured film’s mechanical properties; monomers affect properties such as viscosity and flexibility; photoinitiators initiate curing; and pigments and additives contribute color and other performance characteristics. The formulation therefore influences adhesion, flexibility, and resistance.
UV lamps and LEDs
UV curing systems may use mercury arc lamps or UV LEDs. FUJIFILM notes that LEDs emit narrower wavelength bands and typically generate less heat than conventional arc lamps. The ink chemistry, light source, and operating conditions must work together; an LED printer should not be assumed to cure every UV ink.

What curing means for production
Because the ink cures into a solid film rather than waiting for ordinary drying, a printed item can often move to finishing promptly. Actual handling and production results depend on the equipment and application, and curing alone does not establish that the ink has bonded well to the material.
Which materials can UV printers print on?
UV printing is used across a range of rigid and flexible substrates. Common families include acrylic, polycarbonate and PVC plastics; metals; glass; coated papers and boards; flexible packaging films; and wood. Mimaki also describes UV printing on non-absorbent plastic, glass, and metal. These categories are starting points, not guarantees for every grade, coating, finish, printer, or ink.

The table describes broad material families, not universal printer compatibility. For example, HP’s Scitex FB500/700 guidance says performance depends on media properties and that smoother media can be more challenging. A printer may deposit and cure ink on a surface while the finished film remains susceptible to peeling, scratching, or abrasion.
Why UV ink adhesion varies
Adhesion depends on the bond between the cured ink film and the specific surface. Surface energy, cleanliness, material composition, finish, ink chemistry, and treatment can all affect that bond. Dust, oil, grease, release agents, and other contaminants can interfere with it, so a visually clean surface is not necessarily ready to print.

Some low-surface-energy plastics may need pretreatment or an adhesion promoter. HP’s corona-treatment instruction for fluted polypropylene applies to its Scitex FB500/700 printer family; it is not a universal instruction for every printer or plastic. Follow the guidance for the particular printer, ink, and substrate rather than applying a treatment by default.

- Identify the exact substrate. Record its material, coating, finish, and supplier specification. A broad label such as “plastic” or “metal” is not enough to establish compatibility.
- Check the printer and ink guidance. Confirm that the manufacturer supports the material and recommends an ink formulation for it. Mimaki advises testing intended materials in its frequently asked questions, and HP’s guidance is specific to its printer family.
- Prepare the surface as specified. Clean it and use a primer, corona treatment, or plasma treatment only when appropriate for that material and printing system.
- Screen surface energy if useful. A dyne-level test kit can help assess surface energy on an unfamiliar surface, as discussed in Printing Industries of America’s guide to UV printing adhesion. A dyne reading is a screening aid, not proof that the print will adhere durably.
- Print and evaluate a sample. Use the actual printer, ink, and substrate. Check adhesion and the conditions that matter for the intended use, such as flexing, abrasion, chemical exposure, or weathering. Do this before committing to production quantities.
When more than one substrate is an option, compare them using the same criteria: adhesion after the specified preparation, surface finish and cleanliness, required flexibility, expected exposure to abrasion or chemicals, and whether the printer maker offers a material-specific ink or treatment recommendation. There is no universal ranking that applies to all material grades.
