All 50 complete games are available from the start. “Shared progression” is better understood as a thread of fictional continuity and discovery across the collection—not a required collection-wide ladder.
How the 50-game collection works
UFO 50 presents its games as releases from UFO Soft, a fictional 1980s developer. The collection spans platformers, shoot ’em ups, puzzles, roguelites, role-playing games, strategy and sports. Some titles connect through recurring characters or sequels, but those connections do not determine what you can play next. The official Steam listing and Mossmouth’s site describe 50 complete games and immediate access to all of them.

That means your progress can be informal: try something, leave it, and return later. The rules, length and difficulty vary by game. Some are built around short arcade-style rounds; others, including adventures and RPGs, ask for a longer commitment.
Where to start
There is no source-backed official “best first game” or required order. Instead, choose a few games that sound appealing and sample different kinds of play. The library’s short premises are a useful first filter; for details, consult the selected game’s in-game instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Pick by genre and session length
- For quick arcade play: look for an action or shooting game and see whether its immediate challenge feels inviting.
- For a longer adventure: the official Steam description calls Campanella 2 an exploration adventure with procedurally generated levels.
- For role-playing: the same description presents Grimstone as a JRPG with skill-based battles and overworld encounters that can be strategically avoided.
- For puzzles, strategy or sports: browse those categories when you want a change of pace from reflex-driven games.
Campanella 2 and Grimstone illustrate the range; neither is an official recommendation for beginners. A low-pressure approach is to try a short session in a few genres before settling into a larger game.
Decide whether you want to play solo or together
Mossmouth says roughly half the collection supports local multiplayer, including co-op and versus play. The exact mode depends on the game. Nintendo’s Switch listing describes single-system play for 1–3 players and lists TV, tabletop and handheld modes. Check the individual game’s description for whether it suits your group and how many people it supports.

- Explore each stage and then find even more secrets by making your way through the stage backwards on the flip side
- Overcome varied enemies and obstacles, like Zombie Guys, Skelesaurus, Ukiki, and Monty Mole as you seek out hidden collectables; ESRB Content: Mild Cartoon Violence; Genre: Action, Platformer
- Pass a Joy Con controller to a friend for 2 player cooperative exploration
- Clad Yoshi in collectable, protective, handicraft costumes as he makes his way through each stage
What “shared progression” means—and what it does not
Some games refer to other titles in the fictional UFO Soft catalogue, and characters recur across games. This gives the collection a shared setting to notice as you browse. It does not mean you must beat one game to open a sequel or unlock the rest: every game is available immediately.
Players sometimes ask, “How does meta progression work?” The practical answer is that there is no required collection-wide unlock sequence described in the official materials. Think of continuity as context you may discover, rather than a system that gates access.

How to handle unclear rules and secrets
With 50 different games, controls and objectives are not uniform. Start with the selected game’s own instructions. If those do not answer your question, Steam lists a community guide titled “The missing manuals – How to play UFO 50 games.” Because some games reward exploration, a detailed guide may reveal discoveries you would rather find yourself.
Secrets are intentional, not a sign that you have missed a mandatory step. In a GamesRadar+ interview, developer Eirik Suhrke said, “UFO 50 is all about exploration,” and, “And in order to have exploration, there needs to be stuff to find.” The interview discusses the Terminal as part of a scavenger hunt and reports that players discovered a 51st game. Treat solution-heavy walkthroughs as spoiler-sensitive if you want to explore unaided.

- Build whatever you can imagine in your own infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
Playing with other people and choosing a version
Local multiplayer is a feature of many—but not all—games in the anthology, so do not assume the whole collection is multiplayer or that every title has the same mode. Check the specific game before gathering players. Nintendo labels the Switch edition “Digital”; its listing does not establish a physical cartridge edition.
