If your TV has a LAN/Ethernet port, connect it to your router with an Ethernet cable and select a wired connection in the TV’s network settings. If it has no network port, connect an HDMI streaming player to the TV and let that player access the internet over Wi‑Fi or supported Ethernet. A TV’s USB port alone does not mean it can use a USB Wi‑Fi adapter.

Choose a connection that your TV and devices support

Option When it works What to check
Ethernet cable to the TV The TV has a LAN/Ethernet port and you can run a cable to the router. Confirm the port is present, then choose Wired or Ethernet in the TV’s network settings. Samsung and TCL document wired setup for supported models: Samsung’s network connection guide and TCL’s internet setup instructions.
HDMI streaming player The TV has an available HDMI input but no usable internet connection of its own. The player supplies the apps and network connection. Check whether it uses Wi‑Fi, has Ethernet, or requires a compatible Ethernet adapter. Apple describes connecting Apple TV to a display by HDMI and notes that models with an Ethernet port can connect to a router: Apple TV setup.
Ethernet adapter for a streaming player The player supports wired networking but lacks a built-in Ethernet jack. Confirm the adapter is compatible with the exact player model. Google documents an Ethernet adapter for the covered Chromecast family: Chromecast Ethernet setup. Roku warns that USB Ethernet adapter support varies among its players: Roku wired network guidance.
TV USB Wi‑Fi adapter The TV maker documents a compatible adapter for the exact model. Do not assume a generic USB Wi‑Fi adapter will work. LG says its AN-WF adapters are intended for specific TV models: LG Wi‑Fi adapter guidance. A Hisense manual for one model says external USB network adapters are unsupported: Hisense manual.

For most TVs without Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, an HDMI streaming player is the straightforward option, provided the TV has an available HDMI input and the player supports the apps you want. Wired networking is possible only when the TV or player has a supported Ethernet connection and the router is reachable by cable.

Check the TV’s ports and model first

  1. Find the exact TV model. Look on the rear label or in the TV’s settings, then consult that model’s manual or the manufacturer’s support page.
  2. Look for a LAN/Ethernet jack. Check the rear and sides of the TV. TCL notes that Ethernet is available only on models with a LAN port: TCL’s connection instructions.
  3. Check for a free HDMI input. You need one to use an external streaming player. Also confirm that the player you choose supports the streaming services you use.
  4. Do not treat USB as a network port. Verify explicit compatibility for a Wi‑Fi dongle or USB Ethernet adapter against the exact TV or player model before buying.

Connect the TV directly with Ethernet

If the TV has a LAN port, connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the TV and the other to a working router. Then open the TV’s network settings and select the wired connection if needed.

Menu labels and paths differ by model, so use the TV manual if those options are not present. Once the TV reports a network connection, open one of its streaming apps to check that it can reach the internet.

Use an HDMI streaming player when the TV has no network connection

  1. Connect the streaming player to an available HDMI input on the TV.
  2. Connect the player to power, then use the TV remote to select the HDMI input you used.
  3. Follow the player’s on-screen setup to join your Wi‑Fi network, or connect it to the router by Ethernet if the player supports that option.
  4. If wired networking requires an adapter, use one documented as compatible with that exact player model. Google’s Chromecast instructions describe HDMI connection to the display and a router-connected Ethernet adapter for the covered setup: Google Chromecast Ethernet instructions. Apple says Apple TV models with an Ethernet port can connect directly to the router: Apple TV setup.

The streaming player provides its own apps and network connection; it does not add Wi‑Fi to the TV’s built-in smart platform. Use the player’s remote and interface for the services running on it.

Consider a TV USB Wi‑Fi dongle only when it is approved for your model

Search the TV maker’s support site using the full model number and terms such as “wireless LAN adapter” or “Wi‑Fi adapter.” Buy a dongle only if the manufacturer lists it as compatible with that TV. LG’s AN-WF guidance is model-specific, and a Hisense manual cited above documents a model that does not support an external USB network adapter. A USB socket by itself is not evidence that networking will work.

Confirm the connection and troubleshoot the right device

  • TV connected by Ethernet but still offline: Check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends and reaches a working router. Reopen network settings and select Wired or Ethernet.
  • Streaming player cannot get online: Check the network status in the player’s own settings. Confirm its Wi‑Fi credentials or Ethernet connection, and consult the player maker’s support for that model.
  • No compatible port or adapter is available: Use an HDMI streaming player if the TV has an HDMI input. Do not assume a phone hotspot, travel router, or generic USB dongle will work; compatibility and service-plan conditions can vary.
